3770k Installed. Want to check everything looks ok + overclocking tips!

yeah the more ram you have usually the more dram,cpu/vtt are needed and looser timings

I see, that makes sense. So the rated latencies for a RAM kit would only be for when they are used on their own is that right? If using 4x dimms, timings would have to be relaxed?

Damn. Realised I was running an old version of prime 95 so tried the latest prime with the AVX instructions (which is a lot more harsh on the cpu apparently) and it crashed with a WHEA BSOD error in 20 mins. Upped vcore to 1.21 and still crashed. Running it again at 1.22 now at 4.5ghz

Thing is vcore under load in cpuz with prime running small fft's is 1.272....

How much of a jump do you guys get from what is set in bios to what it goes to under heavy load?

My bios is at 1.25 not tried to lower it any yer as im lazy, put the chip in, went straight for a x45 multiplier at 1.25 and its been stable ever since.

my CPU-Z reports voltage at 1.258.

Ok, thanks. Weird thing is, when I set bios volts to 1.21 my max volts in prime were 1.248 which was only 0.08 volts more than setting 1.20 in the bios. When setting bios volts to 1.22, my prime95 max vcore reading was 1.272. Perhaps 1.15 would be the sweet spot, but bios setting of 1.22 seems to be have been stable for everything I have thrown at it today. Small fft AVX instruction Prime for 1 hour, watching sky go, playing battlefield 3 e.t.c

I am a bit disappointed with Battlefield 3 though, my 670's in sli still are not being used at 100% on a 64 player server : /

Ill have a game later and take a few screenshots to check mine. Unfortunately i dont seem to have any saved with the sli setup. Most seem to be from when i had my 3570k and one 670. Caspian border 64 conquest is a good map to test on.

Yeh I just tried a 64 player Caspian map. When looking in certain positions framerates dropped to low 70's and gpu usage went down to 60%.

The i7 is only at 60% utilisation according to task manager. Temps only get up to 60-65 in Battlefield 3 which seems reasonable (my 2500k got 60 degree temps in Battlefield 3).

I thought I would see much better gpu usage to be honest.

60% cpu usage is round about the same as i got on the 3770k and the 4770k in sig. Max temp of 65c as well with both cpu's. And the one in sig is a very hot runner. My card use does dip a bit here and there, but the game feels a lot smoother than when i had the i5.

that's down to llc (loadline calibration) it adds a touch more voltage depending on what level you use,to account for vdroop (cpu voltage droop under load)

as for gpu's are they stock/oc? might be worthwhile oc'ing them slightly

Good shout wazza on oc'ing the cards a bit. It's something i dont bother with myself as my top one runs quite hot at stock. 71c and 55c respectively. Both are slightly clocked from the factory.

Well one things if for sure. Getting a massive bump in GPU usage and minimum framerates in crysis 3 in the heavy grass animation bits! One scene where I know it would hit 30fps and 60 percent gpu usage on my 2500k is hitting near 100% usage and 60 fps now with this 3770k!

looking forward to buying mine Jono. Just hoping the 3770K come down in price. Can't understand how an equivalent Haswell chip sells for less. A lot of other retailers sell these for £220ish but I'm devoted to OCUK lol

Yep, crysis 3 is a game that really shows the benefit of an i7. Personally i think bf3 is a bit iffy in parts. Hopefully bf4 is a lot better.

Yeh Crysis 3 showed a huge difference! I really want BF4 to come out so I can see what difference it makes there as well.

I am having funny issues with my ram configuration though. I am not sure my cpu likes my mixed ram kits. I have a 2x 4gb g-skill C8 kit mixed with a 2x 4gb corsair vengeance C9 kit.

Basically everything seems stable at 1600mhz with relaxed timings (11,11,11,29) BUT every time I turn my pc on it will turn on, then quickly off again, then turn back on and boot up and when I check cpuz it has changed the speed down to 1333mhz....

I think it doesn't like my ram speed settings so it tries to find a speed it likes then boots properly. Seems like it is struggling with the mixed dimms or something

weird issue, but I am thinking perhaps I should just sell my 2, 2x4gb kits and get one high speed (2133mhz) 2x8gb kit..

Yep it is unstable at 1600mhz and 9,9,9,24. Interesting thing is, 9,9,9,24 do show up on the dram timings as the default settings, however if the timings are left at auto and I select the memory multiplier for 1600mhz, my PC will seemingly either choose to boot at 1333mhz and 9,9,9,24 or 1600mhz at 11,11,11,29.

It clearly cant do the rated speed and latency with this 4 dim configuration. It is weird as I am pretty sure my i5 2500k with the same mobo did. But then again, that sometimes did this start then stop then start again thing and I never bothered to check what the ram was actually booting up at for years :P

I have read that mixing ram kits can have all sorts of issues and that when mixing, they might not actually be able to run at their full rated speed together. Maybe that is the issue I am having.

Ok I set all RAM settings back to auto and now it boots and restarts cleanly without any 'power off, then power on again, then boot' nonsense.

This boots with 1333mhz and 9,9,9,24 timings so the bios only seems happy with 1333mhz speed on the ram even though both kits are rated at 1600mhz

Is this simply because it is struggling with 4 sticks running at 1600mhz?

Tried upping chipset voltages, sa is one i remember and io from z77, may need a boost as your on 4x4 dimms.
