380x - When?

Looks like it will be in the middle of the the 30% performance gap between the 960/380 and the 970/390.
Looks like that might be the case.

To be honest it does make sense though, as there's a relatively huge gap between the 960/380 and 970/390, for both the performance and price.

"Ideally" the 380x should come in at no higher than £180-£200 inc. VAT, and possibly drop to £165-£185 few weeks later.

I can see them at 180-200 but not 165-185 unless 380 4GB drops in price to maybe 150

Its a damn good card, it is King in the sub £200 bracket, comfortably beating the 960 4GB for only a few quid more. :)

Might push NVIDIA to bring out a 960Ti, or they could just react by do a 950, 960, 970 and 980 price drop. Though I suspect both are unlikely as the next generation from NVIDIA is now around 3-6 months away.

Don't even think about ordering the XFX R9 380X guys. I plan on buying them all!! Then after a day or so of eating Haribo I plan to execute my evil plan.

So far the XFX ones are the only 380/390 we sell with a 0% return rate, to be fair this is extremely rare as it means we have had no failures or even un-wanted returns. Typically every VGA card sits between 2-5% for returns.

They sell and don't come back, exactly what we like to see. :)
The plan being to return all the XFX cards and ruin Gibbo's return rate :D

Seriously though I've just read the review of the Sapphire card over on Hexus: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/88139-sapphire-radeon-r9-380x-nitro/

What a fantastic bit of kit. Pleased (relieved) to see the TDP kept at 190w and power usage only a small bit higher then the R9 380. Won't have to mess around with the cooling or PSU if I drop a R9 380X into my system.

Do we know what availability is going to be like on these cards? Was going to hang on until Black Friday passes to make a final decision. If stock is going to be tight, I might want to think about pre-ordering a R9 380X now.

Stock is due any day, plenty of them. The prices won't be reduced any further than our current prices, we've gone quite aggressive. :)

Nvidia really dropped the ball not putting out a card between a 960 and 970. Seems like it's basically too late to do it at this point.

Anyways, this card looks great and fills an important spot that had been missing for both manufacturers. Before, I hated recommending a card in the price bracket below the 970/390 and now it seems there's a sure fire answer.

EDIT: Though it's interesting the 280X still beats in a fair few games. That could be a bit confusing for some.

Actually the 380, 380x, 390 reminds me A LOT of the how the HD5770, HD5830, HD5850 were back then...

The 380X is still quite a long way behind the 390, due to it still only have the same 32ROPs as the 380, comparing the 64ROPs on the 390.

Agreed, it's worth adding a few more quid for a 390 imo :)

Hawaii cores do seem to be much stronger too, and you get more of them!!

Bah! Do I buy a 380x now or wait to see if 390 cards drop to the same (or lower) price for black Friday?

Which one is the better card?

The 390 still a much more powerful card thanks to its 64ROPs, 25% more stream processors and 512-bit bus comparing to 380x's 32ROPs and 256-bit bus. The 380x is around 10% faster than the 380, but the 390 is around a good 40-50% faster than the 380...so it's really worth stretching the budget.

Except for the circumstance of 390's price is actually out of your budget reach rather than you wish to save about £50-£60, people should still go for the 390 over the 380x.

And yes waiting for 390 to pop-up during Black Friday deals sounds like a good idea.
This I would advice on 390 deal. ;)
