3870 x2, Unstable, random crashes 8.4, 8.5 etc

I have lots of different types of crash/

1. Black screeen, fan goes loud (I think that was because the fan speed profile wasnt working, fixed that with rivatuner)

2. Crash, just randomly turns off (maybe power, although some times it crashes on desktop??)

3. Wierd stripy colours on screen (Probably heat related)


I know for a fact that my fan speed controller isnt working and i have fixed that, but are you sure it is my psu, because sometimes crash 2 happens on desktop, the graphics card cant be drawing much power then can it?

Until you replace or test one or the other (in a different system, or acquiring one or the other from somewhere) then no, we can't be sure. We're taking calculated guesses. I'll be honest, I'd never even heard of Oryxx, which is why that's the most likely cause in my honest opinion. The HD3870X2s appear very solid (along with all the HD38x0 range) from what I've seen (I've got a HD3870 myself) so if it is that failing, it's uncommon. How reliable these Oryxx thingy is... who knows?

Granted if it powed 2x8800s, the it's got more going for it than most budget PSU's, but there's nothing to suggest it couldn't sustain high load for pronlonged periods, leading you to where you are now.

Short of you swapping similar components around though, none of us can tell you what's causing the issue - only what we'd look at ourselves.
