I have the above graphics card and have been having problems playing my game (Farming Simulator 2009 and please no smart remarks), the computer then freezes and after a few seconds it shuts down and reboots back to normal.

I then ran FURMARK and the temps got to around 86 on both GPU's, then out of the blue the screen turned off and wouldnt come back on I, I had to reboot the system to get the screen to come on again.

Ive been told the card may be dying but wanted to get you opinion.

I had same issue, i got same card.
I overclocked my CPU, but was not stable, i had to increase ram voltage, never happened since.

What power supply do you have? Could be making the graphics card run hotter if it isn't getting sufficient power. Mainly you want to look for how many amps the +12V rail(s) has.

As mentioned above, make sure it isn't clogged up with dust too.

ok, you've got enough wattage on the power supply, and if you say it isn't clogged then it's probably not getting enough power (therefore straining the card, making it hotter).

If you can find out the amps as I mentioned above that would help us help you. I don't own a 3870x2 myself but as its a dual gpu card im guessing it would need at least 40 amps on the +12V rail.

just remove the side panel of your PC, and on the power supply there will be a sticker with the ratings on, you're looking for +12V.

Alternatively if you know the exact model of the power supply you could look on the manufacturers website.

Tripple 12V rails provide independant reliable power to the cpu, video card and other components with a combined rating of 50A maximum!
that what it says in the manual

Right, sounds like you have more than enough power in terms of wattage and amperage. If the card is dust free too, then more than likely theres something not quite right with the card itself.

Make sure the card is seated correctly in the PCI-e slot, and attach the external power connectors (guessing it uses 2 6-pin connectors??) securely (try to avoid using the molex adaptors if possible).

Also try monitoring the temps while the card is at idle to try and give us an idea of what could be happening.

here ya go heres the temps a couple of minutes ago

the card plugs directly into the PSU

That does seem a tad high for idle temps but not too far off considering its a dual GPU card. Considering it is evening time now (you may have the heating on etc) temps are generally higher, but how is your general airflow through out your case (how many fans do you have?)

ive got two 120mm fan, one came with the case and there was space for another one at the front

i also have one 80mm fan on the side cover blowin air in towards the processor
so 3 fans with one more on its way, theres space beneath the cd rom drive that i want to utilise so am gunna put another one in there as ive no plans to add any more cd roms etc

thats the temperatures i get early in the morning to they are always around that no matter what time of day

I don't think it's shutting off from too much heat. 86C isn't enough to make it shut down. Have you overclocked your system? Positive it's stable?

its running on dual core standard no overclocking at all, i only play one game atm so i dunno if it happens in anything else. but its fine when im on the net or messing bout on windows, once i play the game for a while its fine then out of the blue it freezes and the computer reboots

True 86c shouldn't make it shut down, at that sort of temps you could expect artifacts in some areas, especially if its overclocked.

Sounds like you've got plenty of air running through your system, as mentioned above, its defo some sort of stability issue, possibly through software (out of date drivers etc) or a piece of hardware thats on its way out

i make sure all my drivers are updated every week so i dont think its that, the only thing that isnt brand new is the graphics card as i bought it off my brother but everyhting else is brand spanking new as the systems onli a few weeks old

Most likely to be they graphics itself then. Do you or your brother have a warranty? Maybe get a replacment, or at least send it off to be tested.
