3870XT Problem?

Hello all, bit of a problem here, not sure quite what's going on.

I received my new 3870XT today, and installed it, but it doesn't seem to be performing well. I've only been able to test it on WoW at the moment, but it is only getting around 20fps.

This is at 1440x900, my system is poor, but I would expect more from it than this?

Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2.6Ghz;
2Gb DDR Ram;
Usual hard disks, sound card etc etc...

I installed the latest 8.3 drivers, and removed all old Nvidia drivers.

I had a Nvidia 7100GS before :(.

I got around 10FPS with the settings on max, compared to the 20 I get now. If I up the clock speed from standard 2.4Ghz to around 2.6Ghz it does improve. But seriously, is WoW actually that demanding? I should still get better than this shouldn't I?

make sure your chipset drivers are installed, run GPU-z to try and spot any anomalies, such as PCI-e speed. check GPU temps and clocks. Ensure Performance mode is set in CCC, if all else fails, uninstall drivers, run drivercleaner then repeat.

All seems okay there, unless I've missed anything? System specs aswell.

All of the settings for the card have been set to performance.

It wouldn't be so bad at 20FPS for now, I could deal with that, except that whenever I turn a corner or anything it only shows about 3 frames while turning.

I don't have 3d06, so I can't comment on that one, but all drivers for the board are installed.

Just running rivatuner while I play, see if I can find anything there.

seems your CPU is bottleneckign the card, Can you not get a better one?

In about 2 months I will have the cash for an upgrade, as I will need a processor, motherboard, ram and a new PSU to upgrade.

After running rivatuner, the card is usuing about 30/50% of the core, which is what I expected from WoW.

What PSU do you have btw? Also, an Athlon 2800+ is the minimum for Crysis, so I doubt that a A64 3800+ is going to starve a GPU in WoW.

WoW demands more CPU and RAM juice than GPU in general. 20fps is not bad at Max Settings. But I do recommend you to get a free copy of 3DMark06 (www.guru3d.com). If the card score around 10k, it's fine. If not, you should re-install the drivers for the Mobo and the GFX.

20fps is the TOP I get, that's wandering around an area where nothing, at all, is going on. As soon as any buildings are near me it drops to around 15, and further when anything else happens. I haven't even dared go to a capital city yet!

DOwnloading 3d06 now, should be done in about 45 mintues :(

not necessarily, but like you say, it's probably not the cause. What brand is it?

Also, I'd say more like 9K on 3D06 for your rig...

15A on the +12V isn't good, if it's the correct PSU model I've found. My HD3850 "requires" 28A on the 12V but my PSU only outputs 26A (and runs fine) but your card is more demanding than mine so yours may "require" 30A but bear in mind these are always overstated to cover manufacturers backs against incompatibilities.

From what it says on the PSU it's 18A on the 12v. Im still not convinced it's that though, as wouldn't there be other issues if it was underpowering it?
