3D Fuzion 7600GT: unexplainable artifacts/corruption

About a week and a few days ago I installed my BFG 3DFuzion Geforce 7600GT (which I got from OcUK) and was very pleased with the performance. But then inexplicably it all went wrong one day (the only thing which changed was that I installed Half-Life 2: Episode One the night before). So I turned on my PC, logged into Windows, and to cut a long story short I had a variety of problems with blank screens, graphical corruption, and the display flickering on and off every second or so. I turned off nVidia's Auto-Overclocking and restarted and Windows worked.

However, I had problems with games: Star Wars: Empire At War would give me giant grey out-of-place polygons and lines after a minute or two and then crash, and 3DMark06 did the same. I asked for help on this guru3D thread, which should give you more information if you need it. I tried reinstalling my drivers, removing my PCI sound card, switching to my integrated graphics and then back again, and eventually it seemed to be fine. 3Dmark06 didn't mess up, and Half-Life 2: Episode One loaded perfectly.

But it wasn't over. Now I have problems in Oblivion: these screenshots show the problem of the giant polygons and lines I get.

Additionally, HL2:EP1 and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter are quite dodgy, crashing a lot and freezing on loading. Of course, I have no idea if these are down to the graphics card, but it might well be a clue.

So after a lot of troubleshooting and research, I'm thinking it's either a duff card, or my PSU is too weak (350W). It doesn't explain why it was running with no problems for a couple of days, or why the problem went away and then came back.

I've no idea why the card isn't working as it should. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for your help.

(additionally, if I do RMA the card, what's my best option: returning the card to OcUK or to 3DFuzion?)

Welcome to the forums. :)

Have you tried different drivers, could be worth a shot i suppose, but it looks like the core on the card to me. :(

Have you tried it another machine if you can also.

Just RMA it back to OcUK if thats where you got it from, pretty quick they are, they say 10 days at the most. :)

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. Yup, I've tried the newest beta driver, the last stable release, and the drivers on my card's CD, and I get the same problem. :( Unfortunately, I don't know anyone else with a PCI-E motherboard, so no chance of testing it on something else.

I would try hard to test it in another pc, before you return it as faulty, to be on the safe side. If its not possible, then pray it is borked , as most retailers test, and charge if it isnt a faulty product.

Ah, fair enough. I can live with the integrated graphics for a few days.

So you don't think my PSU is the problem? That's the only thing I could think of, that 350W is perhaps a little bit low.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but oh dear.

I assumed if I RMA'd it, I'd get a nice shiny new card and everything would be fine. I got the same box I'd sent off back, and I assumed there would be a shiny new card inside. The bubble wrap around the card which I had wrapped it in was gone, so I know they must have opened the box at least, but the card was in the same anti-static bag I sent it in (the sticky label was, well, unstuck).

Just installed the card, and poof! the same problems as always in Oblivion. Disappointment is not the word.

So now I have several problems: either this is a new card and the problem is due to something else (doubtful), or they've sent me my old card back. Which means I have to work out why they did that, and either get stuck with a card they can't find a problem with or send it back to OCuk to actually get an actual replacement this time... hum.

Anyway, I've sent them a webnote. Anyone else who's got an RMA, would they send the replacement in your old box?

Last time i RMA'd my X1800 i got a OEM Replacement card and didnt get the original box

Ring up ocuk and ask for andy mclean the tech manager,. failing that ask for ryan , they are both top blokes and sorted out my problems :)

EDIT : Ring him and ask him what they did with your card I.E Test it..

I always make a mark on the card before i send it. that way i know when i get the same card back. get a pernament marker and dot the heatsink or a sticker on the card, not too obvious but sufficent for you to see that it is the same card when it returns. I know it sounds silly but in this day and age you cant be too cautious.

King.

Just got a note from Ryan telling me my card passed all the tests, which I'm at a loss to explain. Could it be anything else in my PC? Or an incompatibility?

My only other option is to return the card to BFG/3DFuzion, but I'm a bit wary about that (will I have to send it to the US?).

I haven't shown him the screenshots, perhaps I will if the problems continue.

Power might be it... these are my readings from SpeedFan at idle (well, general Windows usage):

Vcore 1.49V
+12V 11.93V
AVcc 3.41V

I don't know if that's good or not. The 12V is a little low, natch.

The bizarre thing is I just played through the Prey demo with not a single problem. And yet if I fire up Oblivion... after ~1 minute of play I get the lines back. This is perhaps a long shot but... the Prey demo runs from my hard drive, but Oblivion uses the DVD drive as well. Is it possible that the extra power used by my DVD drive is enough to tip the PSU over the edge and mess up my graphics card?

This pattern follows to other games. Half-Life 2: Episode One (hard-drive) - no problems. Star Wars: Empire at War (DVD) - problems.

(Running Oblivion apparantely dropped my 12V to ~11.78V. Might be on to something...)

I can't thank you enough for your help, everyone. I hope we can nail this down.

your rails look fine. id say anythin down to about 11.2v is good (used to have a shuttle that had a 12v rail of about 11.3v and that ran everythin fine)

i had something similar to your problem on an old ati g-card (cant remember what card it was though lol) but basically everytime i ran 3dmark03 i got loads of pink lines across the screen. it turned out to be drivers that were conflicting with each other.

basically i had just uninstalled the old ones and installed the new ones, but there was still a few bits of hte old drivers left behind which caused the newer ones to mess up.

get drivercleaner, and the latest stable drivers from where ever, uninstall the old ones, run driver cleaner and remove anythin to do with geforce graphics drivers, restart and install the new ones. (some people say its also best to run driver cleaner in safe mode, then restart into normal windows and install the latest drivers)

hope this helps

i wouldn't like anything less than 11.5 - but his rails are fine

You say you were using an autoclocking program? Are you sure it's disabled and not loading unstable clocks on Boot?

You mention it went wrong after installing HL2:Episode One - could the install have included a minor DX9C revision that happens to be corrupt? (A mate had a problem with FEAR installing a slightly later version of DX9C that was corrupt and caused blank screens on a game).

Failing that, could it be that the components in your PC are hotter, and causing overheating, while the OCUK test bed is in a cooler PC, so that's why they don't get a problem?

what are the gpu temperatures?

install rivatuner and use its monitor. it will show you voltages fan speed, tempetature and both core and ram clock speeds.

while the monitor is up and running run rthdribl in a window and you should see the clocks on the card go up to its normal 3d speeds. post the clock speeds it uses in 3d mode and also monitor the temperature. let us know what happens.
