3D Gaming room - Build thread

Indeed it is! I am back in Devon now, I moved up for a year to renovate a customers house.

I bet you anything that after the dust had settled and disapproving looks have faded, she'll be telling all her mates about it, probably not saying "indie has a home cinema" but saying "we have a home cinema" lol, you can pretty much count on it even if she doesn't like films etc, no girl would ever admit it though lol.

It would be worth a trip into the city or to litchfield to have a look at either Richer Sounds branch to see for yourself, they will demo this very PJ for you. Unfortunately a percentage of employees don't really know what they should about it all but it will give you the best idea of what to expect. Don't let them fool you though, their knowledge is somewhat limited and the guys over at AVForums will be the folks to talk to really!

Anyway, it's lying if you just don't say how much lol, my speakers cost a lot more but I can't get in trouble if I don't say how much they were ;)

Ahh thats pretty good then! ... I'd much prefer Devon ;)

If my bass sells... I might just take the plunge! we'll see :p

I work in the city so might see if I can pop down at lunch or something. Saying that, Black Friday deals coming up soon, so MIGHT even get a decent deal!

Might have to visit the AVForums - Everytime I browse though I get disheartened as everything they seem to be speccing is 1k+ lol :D

Hoho, I could do that.. .getting away with it would be a different story though! ;)

Cool, you won't be disappointed, and you still won't be in 4 years time! Then 4K will be at reasonable prices for an upgrade ;)

If you haven't been to richer sounds, it's easy to find as it is under a big blue rounded skyscraper so you can see it from miles away!

As for the forums, there are some over the top wealthy members but normally there will be good folk to help you out. I think the HD33 and it's rivals are in the sweet spot right now, anything less and you are faced with much worse performance and anything more is stupid money for diminishing gains. It still walks all over any TV though on a price / performance scale.

You will cringe at any LED TV after the demo too as the motion is amazing :)

I believe my Panasonic is 800Hz Native and 3000Hz software enhanced and I still prefer the PJ. Anyway, I'm being too much of a salesman, updates to follow!

Ok, so had to give my ears a rest and breathe some non basement air for a bit so decided to make a table for my AV receiver.
I don't have many good pictures but it's just a basic coffee table made from solid oak that I had left over from fitting the skirting board in my basement.

Oak is my favourite wood to work with, it's stunning whether it be machined or rough cut and you can sand it down increasing the grit on the sandpaper to a point where it becomes soft like if you were to pour flour on some glass and run your hands over it, odd description I know lol but it's hard describe.

I routed a step into the lengths before I cut the mitres which allowed me to fit a clear acrylic top. I also had to make the legs by cutting a 45 degree edge down 2 sections and joining them together with a biscuit joiner. This gave the table a more bulky appearance and also allowed me to fit a clear shelf on chrome dowel pegs to sit the AVR on.

There is not one screw, nail or staple in the entire table, every joint is a glued biscuit joint, cut with this: Biscuit jointer

Very nice, sir!

I'm rubbish at woodwork, I may employ you to make me an arcade cab shell for my man cave at a later date ;)

Also... I spoke to the missus... I think I've got the go ahead <3

Wow, that is very good carpentry skills. Now i know who to call when i want my fishtank boxing in as i only live down the road by merry hill :D Are you going to black out the side walls and ceiling as well to improve on contrast? I've just bought some black felt with the intentions of making some large tiles that will stick to the ceiling to get better blacks. At the moment it's a white ceiling and it reflects far too much light onto the PJ screen. Also got some black curtains to cover both doors. The mrs loves watching films so there isn't a problem gradually turning it into a half baked bat cave.

Would love to have a demo of 3D when it's all done bud to see what all the fuss is about. I'm currently looking for a new projector, and this might sway me. :)

I'd love to make a cab, might need to send it up from Devon though!

That's some good news for the man cave :D neither of you will regret it well, I should warn you though that it may lead to an insatiable urge to get amazing speakers to match :p

Thanks, Oak is amazing, even when it comes in the form of skirting board :D I'm afraid that I'm back in Devon now, I'm a bit gutted too as after a year in Rowley I didn't really meet anyone! It's a shame. Same goes as what I said to Indie, it's always possible to ship stuff ;)

I used black geotextile (weed membrane) for my walls and ceiling, I'll get the last section posted so you can see. Unfortunately it was just a temporary trial and as I moved, I didn't finish it as I would have like. MK2 is in planning in my new place at the moment but I'm limited to our living room so have to keep my fiancé in mind too as she's not quite so enthusiastic about 100" gaming film beer nights :p

I would love to demo it but unfortunately it's all out of action right now and I'm in Devon, if you are around here in the new year we could sort something though. A lot of people don't like 3D but I think I mentioned before, a huge amount of them are watching on smaller screens and the immersion just doesn't cut it.

For me, films aren't as good to be honest, it's the games that blew me away, imagine running through the forest in Crysis with all the graphics mods around, looks awesome! That said though, I am into space quite a bit and I was truly stunned by the IMAX 3D Hubble film, think about flying through a HD 3D nebula, it has to be seen to be believed

Well I'm glad that's settled then ;)

Indeed, I've got:
Sony STR-DB930 receiver
Sony SA-VE705 speakers

at the moment, donated to me by a friend at work who has replaced his system, so hoping to use those for the time being, that is, until I can afford something better :D
