3D: gimmick or not?

I like 3D. I've only seen Avatar, but I found it totally engrossing. It was more like the actor was in the room with you, than you viewing them on a screen.

That said, I have no time for anything not filmed from the off in 3D. I certainly wouldn't pay to watch something shot with a standard camera and later converted to 3D in post production. That is a gimmick, no two ways about it.

3D is pants - defeats the purpose of HD to be honest, as the picture is split into stages, with the front stages clearer than the stages in the background.

It completely killed Avatar for example - whats the point having HD super duper graphicly animated environments when most of it is blurred out!!

Obviously the TV manufacturers need to sell something so thats the next gimmick to go for!. In all honesty I only think HD took off aswell as it has done due to the super thin TFT panels - most of the people I know couldn't care less about HD (and can't tell the difference) - All they wanted was a slimmer TV! lol

Why's it peeing up the wall.
It's vital schools use the latest technology. Not only does it improve results, it will also be standard in many workplaces.

I can't be sure it's the same system but our hospital (with education money) bought a 3D system which I was in charge of and now it doesn't get used.
We also had the body programs and they had the school childrens attention for about 10 minutes.

The studios and filmmakers need to tread carefully.

A good, shot-for-3D movie, like Avatar looks great in 3D because time and care were taken to shoot in ways that compliment the format.

'Epic Kids movie 2 3D' that is essentially a 2D-3D conversion is distorting the public's perception of 'good' 3D, which is why the uptake is slower. Think about it, you pay %20 more for the same film, so you expect good things... See a few bad conversions in a row, and you'll soon stop paying.

For me, 3D is here to stay, but it could go the way of SA-CD if things don't pick up soon.

I watched my first footie game last week in 3D, Man Utd vs Chelsea and it was good in places but no different in others.

As it is, its too expensive and no standard ie. passive or active, so i will be waiting for a few years yet

not a gimmick

Study shows 17% increase in exam results with 3d learning.

The fact that there can be a 17% RISE in results in this day and age is rather amazing. Has anyone seen the standard of work at this level of education? It's seriously pathetic. I can't believe 17% of students were getting low enough marks to improve. lol

Our education system is a joke. Kids are about 5 years behind the level they should be at due to poor schooling.

Deviated from the point a bit...but everytime I read about anything education related it just reminds me.

It wasn't just our education. It was several different countries.

There's plenty of room for improvement. Plenty do not obtain top marks.

Few questions;
To those who call this a gimmick, why?

Whats your experience with 3D?, just cinemas with no read up knowledge on the technology.

Have you ever played a game (Simulation: FSX, MMO: WoW, Racing: DiRT3) in 3D?

Have you ever watched a movie that uses 3D throughout with no BS (e.g. not cinema 3d films)

What sort of 3D technology have you experienced? (e.g. anaglyph, stereoscopic etc)

I appreciate opinions, but if you don't understand 3D and have only been to the odeon a few times and watched a 3D film and basing your evaluation on 3D as a gimmick. Then thats like me going into the motor forums and and saying something I know nothing about. I generalising here, no means attack anyone; but please don't call the 3D industry out (which has been booming for past year or so) We're in a recession as well, If you know a lot about 3D and still think it's a gimmick, then fair enough please explain why! :D

I think you're getting a bit beyond the realms of this discussion, and I'd guess that's because you appear to have something of a vested interest in 3D. Do you work in 3D in some way, shape or form?

Hmmm, to answer the question, yes and no.

WHilst I've seen a few films that looks pap in 3D, I think there is potential in the technology. Depth is simply something that 2D can't do as well as 3D when implemented properly.

The unfortunate thing is most movies simply have it tacked on as a wow effect. However, having seen it work in other ways on things like the 3DS, I can appreciate how 3D can make an experience better. It can simply give you a better perspective and make things feel more 'there' as though you're looking into a window or thicker screen.
