Seen some company called edimensional selling 3D glasses which are meant to make games look like real 3D!
Has anyone tried them and do they really work?
I'm a bit skeptical but if they are any good might have to buy a pair for xmas!

There's nothing special about 3D glasses per se, you could get some beatup sunglass with no lenses in and stick a blue and red filter in each one of the holes and have yourself a pair of 3d glasses, what's more important is the game actually supporting it, and as far as I know there aren't many that do.

I went to see Beowolf 3D a few weeks back, the graphics on that were immense, i would welcome it with open arms to come to gaming, but would be hard to render in realtime.

Are they the standard 3D glasses that you get with comics etc or proper gaming 3D glasses?

They used to do ones that would flicker really fast and alternate between each eye, the screen would flicker at the same rate and show a slightly different view point of the image in order to create a 3D looking image.

Never tried them so no idea if they worked or not!

Not exactly sure how those 3D cinema things work, but I imagine all the computer would have to do would be to render the same image from a slightly different position. Easily do-able in real time.

Hotpot85 used 3D glasses for gaming for quite sometime. I am sure if he see's this thread he will leave his thought's. There was a reason why he stopped using them, but oldtimers has struck again and I cannot remember

I read somewhere that 3D glasses cause headaches, blurred vision and even vomiting but don't know if this applies to recent models.
I'd imagine if this was true it would be less so on an LCD display without the nasty CRT flicker!

mate had some they plugged into the gfx card, so weren't just different coloured lenses, aid they where great for playing oblivion, but you need a refresh rate above 70hz so don't really work on lcds.

I'd get some but my monitor is only 60hz:(

I bought a pair of 3d glasses about 2 years ago, can't remember what they were called, but instead of the blue/green lenses they used shutters in the glasses sync'ed to the monitor producing alternating left and right eye images.

Too much hassle if you ask me and the glasses looked too geeky.

I have a pair of the edimensional ones, they are lcd shutters and work really well with CRT, and ok with LCD. Nvidia cards seem to be better with them, but I havent tried ATI.

Have used them with fltsimx and they make a great difference, its like looking through a window into a world - I do get a headache after a while and can get a bit nautios if I use a lot of movement. Combine them with a IR head tracker and its great (with 3 screens for surround gaming is awesome!). Reccomended but dont expect miracles! The VR920 full headset is meant to be the way ahead ($400 and 8 weeks delivery is holding me up at the moment).

Any other questions drop me a email (ps didnt work on vista last time I tried, but I think they are sorting that out)

Try them, its worth a shot!

I had a pair with my geforce 3 card. Back in 2001. If the game was designed to use them, it where good. If they weren't it wasn't anything special. Also remember they half your fps.

To work well you needed a monitor with 100Hz or higher refresh, as each eye only sees every second frame. Some CRTs can do 120Hz at lower res, so LCD would look worse actually. And there's about a 40% hit on frame rate because you're rendering the scene from two perspectives. It's one of those technologys that hasn't come together.

I remember hearing that come manufacturer was working on a display with two LCD layers 'angled' like holographic print, so each eye would see a different image. Trouble is it would only work at a 'sweet spot' distance from the monitor. Too close or too far or to much to the left or right and you'd see to overlapping images.

The most likely application where this could take off IMO, would be if there was cheap, high-res head-mounted displays, perhaps with OLED displays. Till then I'd give this area a miss.:(

Why can't they use the same technology used for Beowulf?

It is similar though isnt it? Liquid Crystal glasses producing a stereo image, or a special monitor or projector, either way it would be expensive I bet. Like someone else said, normal lcd screens dont refresh fast enough anyway for it to work.

3d glasses are the bee's knees! But only work if you have a CRT monitor. That is the ONLY reason I do not use them now and I miss them a lot!
People get the wrong idea when you mention 3d glasses. They instantly think of paper glasses with coloured filters. That's the primitive 3d.
These are shutterglasses. Electronically synched LCD lenses that shut off the vision in each eye alternately in conjunction with a multiangled perspective generated on the screen by your Nvidia drivers. And the effect is breathtaking!
I liken the effect to the Holodeck from Star Trek. You actually feel like you're there! You feel like you can reach out and pick up objects. When you duck behind a crate, you actually FEEL like you're behind a crate and not just looking at a picture.
Most games work straight out of the box but you need a high end computer as the frame hit is about 40% in 3d. When I used them a couple of years ago, nine out of ten games worked well in 3d. To me, they were indispensable.
The Edimensional glasses are the ones I used. Even though the company say that they work with LCD monitors, I believe the effect is crap with LCD. I urge anyone who is trying these to try with a CRT for guaranteed results.
I long for the day when I can use 3d glasses with my LCD monitor.
I crapped myself when I played FEAR for the first time in 3d.
Try them! You'll be shocked at how good they are!

think your on about a certain company advertising this ?

Zalman ZM-M220W 22 inch Wide Trimon 2D/3D LCD monitor

cost like £430 and includes 3d glasses.... bit pricey cant tell if it works...

That was what I was going to post. The Zalman thing apparently works really great, theres a review on custompc, not sure if I can post it as its just hardware reviews but advertises other companies. It also only has driver support for a few games, on a single lcd screen, but looks like it might be very nice. Its a technology thats long overdue in my eyes.

It would actually be much simpler and cause less compatability issues if it was the monitor itself that switched from normal to stereo image.

After a quick google, they are actually available :)

Zalman 22" Trimon

With the shutterglasses, compatibility isn't really an issue as the stereo drivers are actually built into Nvidia drivers. Don't know how good this Zalman thing is but from what I've heard, 3D with LCD monitors is not very good.
Having said that, I'll ask the guys on the 3D forums. There's a whole 3D stereo community out there with some very knowledgeable and helpful guys.
