Everyone always says 3D Vision basically halves your FPS and it did when it was first released. I have never thought to check it recently & have still just assumed it would still be half. Last night I decided to see what Serious Sam 3 was like in 3D. I have been playing it normally so have all the settings on Ultra and thought the best thing to do would be to boot into the game, switch on 3D vision, check the framerate & reduce settings to what looks best. This however didn't happen. My frame rate was 63 (using in game display frame rate option) and turning on 3D vision reduced my framerate to 61. I have now tried many different locations including the huge battles and its the same, 2 or 3 fps drop at the most.

I'm now going to check other games because surely if SS3 can do 3D with such a minimal hit other games can too. I'm going to load fraps & try various games like Skyrim and Alan Wake etc then report back here. Sorry if this is common knowledge now, but it wasn't known to me & by the amount of posts I see saying it halves FPS I feel it would be good to investigate this now as it's definitely changed since release.

Ok
Alan Wake and Syrim both only loose about 3 fps. It fluctuates between 2 and 5 fps loss. Alan Wake doesn't even have a 3D profile yet.

I have nvidia 3d vision with my single GTX 480 (18% overclock roughly)

Mainly watched SBS 3D movies with it. Not sure what games to play in 3D for an ultimate experience :p

Any games.
However 3rd person games are better then first person games in 3D. First person games everything is 3D into the screen. Third person games have things come out of the screen towards your face quite a lot.

I have found the only game to lag slightly is BF3. I say slightly but being honest it is fine but just does not feel as smooth as 2D.

Colasanto buy Trine 2 to realy show off the 3Dness....My m8's can't believe how good it looks in 3D.

Hi there,

Have you tried using FRAPS to check the framerate?

I wouldn't use the in-built framerate monitors in games, since the games still produce a similar number of frames per second compared to in 2D mode - it is just that in 3D this number is split between your two eyes - so each eye only sees half the framerate indicated. I believe FRAPS shows the actual framerate you see per eye.

As per my OP, I used fraps to check all the games. It was just SS3's fps option that made me think about it :p

I would've thought FRAPs would still report the overall FPS of both sides combined. Surely halving it would show the actual FPS you see per eye?

I believe current versions of FRAPS show the framerate per eye when running in 3D mode.

Yes, but you mention that you reduced the settings before trying the game again in 3D. Have you tried maintaining the same high settings in both 2D and 3D and then see what the framerate difference in FRAPS is?

At what point does he say he's running games in 3D at reduced settings?

And yet if you read on he says he neer needed to reduce settings as there was no FPS hit

I'm not sure tbh, he doesn't explicitly say he doesn't change the settings (he says "This however didn't happen" which could mean a number of things)- hence my initial request for clarification.

Also, may I ask the OP what 3D monitor you are using?

I just loaded up Dirt 3, as BF3 would not start, because I couldn't sign in....Anyways in 2D, with FRAPS I was getting average 85-90 FPS and with FRAPS, in 3D, I was getting average 41-45 FPS. So it would seem that it is halved and using basic math overall is only a couple of frames down.
Hope this helps Andi :)

It was good of you to go and test it yourself, nice one.

That performance drop sounds about right, since the game has to create two images (one per eye) for every standard frame - so a ~50% performance is a fact of life with this shutter-glasses implementation of 3D.

No problems and glad to report back with stats as you help many others on this forum :)

I would agree that the frames would be halved for each eye, with a maximum of 60 I would guess (Trine 2 runs at 60FPS in 3D. Never over or under that).

Not sure on that though.

Trine 2, Dirt 3, F12011, Fifa 11/12, Trackmania games with shadows off, Tombraider series, FSX, Streetfighter, Race07, Grid, flatout 2, Black ops, Yars revenge, I could go on and on, just try some of your older games because it will feel like a brand new one.
