3D possible on AMD?

im on the market for a tv... and i have a choice between a 47" LED tv... or a 51" Plasma with 3D.

With only £50 difference, i don't know which to get. 4 inches does make quite a difference size wise between the two tv's. Obviously LED is the better for picture quality. But im confused on the 3D.

I have a AMD 6950 graphics card. If i connect this up to the tv via HDMI, will it support 3D with the blu ray drive. Does it support Passive and Actice. If its active do i need special glasses like the Nvidia ones.

There doesnt seem to be much info on the net, otherwise i am looking badly. Someone care to give me some info.

Comes with a media player. Not sure about Blu Ray, but for that there is a version of PowerDVD (blu ray edition or something).

Yes, 3D works fine on all AMD HD 6000 and 7000 series cards, so your 6950 will be fine.

To play 3D videos on a 3DTV you simply need to plug the TV to the HDMI 1.4 output on the graphics card and make sure you are running software that can play 3D videos/blu-rays (like PowerDVD 10/11/12 Ultra, WinDvd pro 11 or Total media theatre 5).

The active 3D or passive 3D tech and glasses is all down to the 3D TV you pick - AMD graphics cards will work fine with both types of technologies, so long as it all works with HDMI 1.4 (which 3DTVs do).

Will you also be wanting to play games in 3D on the 3DTV, or is it mainly for 3D videos? If so then you will want to invest in tridef - which is a middleware which allows games to be played in 3D on a 3D display like a 3DTV or DP/HDMI 3D PC monitor.

Also, please bear in mind that it isn't certainty that LED backlit TVs have better image quality than Plasmas - since many plasmas offer amazing image quality which will put edge-lit LED TVs to shame, though admittedly the higher-end full-array LED backlit TVs do look very nice. May I ask which particular models you are looking at.

I use a nvidia 460 (900mhz OC) in my HTPC on a 42 inch samsung 3DTV which came with 4 pairs of active shutter glasses (not the crap passive ones).

My nvidia drivers allowed 3D gaming and movie playback "out of the box" but with AMD i do believe you need to purchase the driver pack seperately such as tridef mentioned above.

Powerdvd 11 or 12 does bluray playback (you might have got it with the drive you bought). My version also converts 2D movies to 3D and does a much better job than my tvs attempts to do so.

ive picked these two for the price... i have an Old 37" LCD tv... got it when HD tvs came onto the market... its only 720p... ive been out of the market for a while so its why i dnt know much... if you can find something for a similar price thats better go ahead

Would you consider the Samsung PS51D550? It's a full 1080p 3D Plasma (the one you mention is 720p) and gets a really good write up here.

another question... for things like power dvd which converts the movie you are watching to dvd... will it be able to play only blur rays or could it play files such as mkv and convert it to 3d?

so from the LED or Plasma ... with the prices... which one would you personally go for....

OK here. This is the front end. Media player (will play anything you have put in codecs for) DVD player photo converter and games.

If you click games it opens another very simple to use menu where you scan for games or add them yourself.

DIVX - 3D. Note how you can pick and choose which mode you want it in.

I would go with the plasma.

I haven't seen any proper reviews for that LG LED and for that price I would guess that it is just an edge-lit LED type, not full-array LED backlighting - so a plasma would look a lot better.

Also, in that review for the samsung plasma about 3D viewing:

3D Material
The Samsung PS51D550 passed all our 3D tests with flying colours. Unlike the company’s comparable LCD TV models, the D550 displays all three frame rates (24, 50 and 60) without any judder or stutter in 3D. It also reproduces all 1080 lines of the 3D image, which is something that Panasonic Plasmas don’t do this year – not even the top-end VT30 model. The 3D experience presented by Samsung’s Plasma panels appears to be remarkably consistent from the entry-level models up to the high-end.
During subjective viewing, we were happy to see almost no crosstalk present. If we ramped up the 3D depth settings to exaggerate the 3D effect, it became visible, but this is to be expected. Our only real criticisms of the PS51D550 operating in 3D mode were the darkening of the picture, and the rougher gradation (with a higher amount of dither noise in the picture) when compared to 2D. The same goes for other manufacturer’s Plasma-based 3D TVs, too. Although things are much improved on the first generation 3D Plasmas, the fact still remains that 2D images have the edge for overall quality, and ultimately, looks.

Also, the samsung does freeviewHD while the LG doesn't - which is sure nice to have if you don't have a subscription HD TV service.

Im not quite sure what you are asking.

I believe the best way to watch 3d blu rays is an iso image if playing from the hard drive mounted in a virtual drive. Mkvs have certain limitations like half resolution..i believe.

As for what power dvd plays, it handles mkvs but not sure about 3d mkv

looks good.... i had no idea AMD cards could do this! so it can literally convert every game to 3d with no problem??? how do the games look?

The games look good. Stupid question, but can you connect the PC to the screen now? if you can mate I'll get you some tridef picture files.

I strongly suggest getting Tridef. It is the software AMD authorise tbh.

If you connect up your PC and get Tridef on I can snap some pics for you

Overall? it's very good. I'm only running a 23" £149 screen and other than a few minor ghosting issues in some games it's been bloody great.

Some games such as Half Life 2 suffer with wall jerk but only on a couple of stages and certainly not enough to ruin the experience.

I mainly play Left 4 Dead (minor ghosting) Left 4 Dead 2 and Fallout 3 and New Vegas. The latter are absolutely incredible in 3D IMO.

Edit. The Dirt series games are absolutely breath taking.

i don't have the tv yet.. as i was deciding which one to get.. but i think ive persuaded myself to get the 3d tv

If you get an Active 3D set (shutter) then I don't think you can use it on an AMD card. I could be wrong of course.

It will work fine. Just like the passive technology it is all handled within the TV. The graphics card just needs to send out the standard 3D 720p@60Hz or 1080p@30Hz frame-packed images via HDMI 1.4 to the TV and the TV then makes that work with either the active or passive 3D technology so the viewer can see it in 3D.
