3D possible on AMD?

personally id go panasonic for tv choice with a minimum of st or gt versions. the image quality is out of this world. the st itself has a game setting which reduces input lag down to 16ms where as the samsung tv has lag all the way up to 35ms the panasonic also has a 2d to 3d conversion which imo works well. st30b 50 inch is what i have

So even with the new ati cards i cant game in 3d @1080p at 60 hz on my samsung ledtv? I have a gtx 570 atm and 1080p at 24hz is painful, and 720p looks rubbish on my tv. If i could find a way to do 1080p 3d at 60hz i would be happy. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, the 3D 1080p@24/30Hz or 720p@60Hz limit is due to the HDMI 1.4 connection, not the graphics card. Therefore, with such a TV you are limited to those resolutions/framerates if you want to run games in 3D.

The graphics cards like the HD 6950 (or GTX 570) are indeed fully capable of running in 3D mode at 1080p@60Hz, however you need a monitor with a Displayport 1.2 connection (or Dual link DVI in the case of the GTX 570) to achieve this - due to the much greater bandwidth on offer compared to HDMI 1.4.

I believe tridef does support 3D mode at 1080p@30Hz (which is better than the Nvidia 3DTV play limit of 1080p@24Hz) and this does work with Nvidia cards- but as you can imgine it still isn't ideal. For 3D gaming on a 3DTV it is generally recommended to run the game at 720p@60Hz and mess around with your picture settings so the upscaling is as good as possible.

I believe you have to use the hdmi port, which means the only way forward is to develop a new hdmi standard that can handle higher bitrates

Thanks for your help guys. I guess i will experiment with mg tv's 3d conversion feature then. Probably not as good 3d effect as 3dvision but at least i can play at 1080p 60hz, and no frame rate hit to boot :-)

Would you consider the Samsung PS51D550? It's a full 1080p 3D Plasma (the one you mention is 720p) and gets a really good write up here.

I have that TV and I'm very happy with it. Got it when they were £650 with 4x pairs of glasses. My only complaint is that the menu system for swapping between inputs is very slow. Not a major issue. Hopefully a firmware update will sort that at some point.
