my friends son is just back from his first year year at uni, and he is looking to build a machine for his second year so he can run 3d studio max (the main bit of software he be using)

what is the best cpu for him i5 or i7 or even a amd and how fast
how much memory i am guessing the more the better but what is the min amount and is he better dropping down the speed of the cpu to up the amount of memory

what the best graphics card for him

budget is around the £800 mark

AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £236.99 (£201.69)
HIS ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £126.99 (£108.08)
2 x OCZ Reaper 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 12800C6 (1600MHz) Dual-Channel (OCZ3RPR1600C6LV4GK) £99.99 (£85.10) x2 £199.98 (£170.20)
Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 AMD 870 (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard £84.99 (£72.33)
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply £55.99 (£47.65)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST31000528AS) £54.14 (£46.08)

7p over, damn, lol

Good spec but you could change the 1090T to the 1055T.This way you'll save money and the 1055T will overlock to 3.2Ghz with no voltage increase.

I would suggest going for an i7 system instead. If you have a look at this set of benchmarks, the i7 920 generally does better than the 1090T in 3DS Max.

If you consider overclocking, with a decent air cooler both of these chips should hit 4GHz. However, the stock speed of the i7 920 is 2.66GHz (4GHz = 50% overclock), compared to 3.2GHz (4GHz = 25% overclock) with the AMD Hex core - so at 4GHz the i7 should be a good deal faster than the 4GHz 1090T.

+1 for the i7

+1 for the i7 does it use cudda? I cant remember if so I would grab an nvidia card as well if not stick with ATI

What does he actually do? If he's making game assets then you don't really need as much CPU grunt as you would if you were making things that take hours to render, but you would probably want to set asside more for the grapics card.
