Hey guys, In the village I live in i'm currently getting around 2mbp/s with Talk Talk, which is bearable for general web browsing but gets frustrating when trying to download! heard some people talking about using a mobile data plan or something similar when living out in the sticks to improve speeds? Is this possible and what would I need?

Thanks

its rubbish! work on improving your sync rate, eg x1fe filter, disconnect the bellwire and get rid of as many extensions as you can.

Bad idea, mobile data is expensive and unless you get fantastic signal you won't get speeds consistently above the 2mbit you currently get anyway. I'd only use 3G to supplement a broadband connection (or in an emergency), not replace it.

Yep, if you want to just download stuff or do anything remotely bandwidth intensive then forget it. The cost alone will be enough to put you off. It's great for situations where you have no fixed line though or just do light browsing.

I used a Three 3G dongle as the only source of internet for a year while living in a village, download speeds were well beyond what anyone was getting on ADSL!

The main thing is the usage caps, I was limited to 5GB a month which is actually fine for general browsing and the odd download. Things like windows updates and drivers and game patches were a killer though :(

i had three also for about a year and for just browsing was fine just stay away from youtube and lke ppl have said watch them game updates and windows updates they will use up your cap dam fast steam is 1 of the worst offenders
down load speed was not bad if i remember right was getting around 450-600 kbs

Thanks for all the replies, maybe not the best option then as I want to be able to download large files from Steam ect.. Router is connected directly to the master socket and I'm getting 2.77 down and 0.57 up with a ping of 44. When down loading in steam it rarely gets above 350-400 kbp/s

Is there any other solutions for faster downloads?

I've been using mine for ages now.

Data is cheap enough nowadays, 11mbps d/l 6u/l and a 60ms ping with UL no fair usage policy. Can't grumble.

T-Mobile, just using tethering via my phone.

I have used it here and down south too. Works great, but gaming does suck on it. It still works for gaming but not great. Loads of guys do the same here.

Satellite could be an option, but there is also higher rates on the cost and money side and the latency/ping will shoot up past 100ms which makes gaming near to impossible. I'd say look into 3G and satellite, but make sure there's at least a few reviews before purchasing anything. Also usage policies as everyone has said also takes a major affect on your download and upload speeds. Other than that you've got 2Mb/s which is 1 quarter of a Megabyte (0.25MB/s). This seems the same speed as you'll receive on 3G and maybe Satellite. Although you will have better usage limits on the actual home connection you have at the minute. Haven't you check the area for FTTC? If so check and see when it is available for purchase because FTTC would outrun everything you've got and have been looking at.
