3gs contract question

I am looking at getting the 3gs on o2 contract, and want to get it on the cheap (32gb model) which is £96 on the £44 per month contract, what I want to know is can I then later on move down to the £35 contract if so how long would I have to wait to do this?
or is there an alternative?

You can change tariff on normal plans after nine months, however when I upgraded to a 3GS (16GB @ £35/m - £87) they told me that I could not change plans for the duration of the contract.

I may have misunderstood them so its best to speak to o2 about it, but I'd bet on you not being able to reduce your plan with the iPhone.

You were sold a load of BS.

After 9 months you can change down, but only by 1 tariff. E.g. you can't go from the £55 /month to the £30 /month in one step.
