3rd drive?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a little help as I'm really no expert...

I have one of the BF3 systems from OCUK, which I spec'd with a 64gb SSD and 500gb HDD.

The plan was to have Windows 7 and BF3 on the SSD and everything else on the HDD.

Seemed simple to me but I didn't realise how quickly the C Drive gets filled up with stuff even when you make an effort to always install new software to the HDD. Also at the time I didn't count on getting all the BF3 DLC but have got it all in the end. So now I'm up to 250mb free on the SSD and there will be no room for the next DLC (yes, Premium for my sins ;-))

I want to keep BF3 on the SSD as the load times are awful on a normal HDD, and of course Windows will stay on SSD.

So, my question is, is it easy to add a 3rd drive (128 or 256 gb SSD) and make everything work well together? I'd have the 64gb SSD for Windows only and all the junk that seems to land on the C Drive during normal operation (common files etc) and the second SSD for BF3 and a few other applications that would benefit from the extra speed. Then the HDD would be for Steam, music and everything else - I still have 300gb spare on the HDD so the actual storage amount isn't an issue.

Or should a layman like myself not get involved in such complexities and just move BF3 to my HDD and stick with the 2 drive set up?

Maybe this is all moot - do PC cases have the room for 3 drives (my model is BF3 War Rush and I chose the standard case)? I can open it up and have a look but maybe somebody knows anyhow.

Also, I don't really fancy just swapping out the 64gb SSD for a bigger one, as I'm not that keen in re-installing Windows.

Any thoughts, tips or links to guides on 3 drive systems would really help out.

Thanks in advance, hope somebody has some advice :)

PS, just previewed the thread and realised it's huge. Sorry, but thanks for reading if you got this far...

Hi,

Yes.

Yes.

It is easy, google is your friend.

just buy a bigger ssd and hdd if you want, something like a 256gb ssd and 2tb hdd

if you use a free cloning program you wont need to reinstall a thing, just clone each drive

use macrium reflect

You could install a 128gb ssd and move BF3 and all its extras onto it, freeing up space on your boot drive, will also leave room for a few other games on the 128gb drive.

Something to take note of, it's a good idea to leave at least 10% free (or 10GB if you have a large drive) on a SSD if it's an active OS drive as the you'll be using the same blocks over and over for temp files.

If you're down to 1 GB left it will reduce the life span of those blocks.

Just buy a new SSD and use http://www.traynier.com/software/steammover to move BF3 over to it. It is exactly what I had to do recently

64GB SSD for OS and BF3 which got full.
500GB platter for Steam, which is also full.
Did not want to stick it on my old platter drive as it is old.
Just bought a new SSD and moved BF3 onto it. When you get updates and DLC, it will automatically save it to the new drive.

Origin itself is still on the 64GB SSD as well, it is just the game files which I have moved.
