ok so in the fog and wet roads on the motorway today i was paying too much attention to what was behind me, not enough to what was going on in front and bumped the person behind me

was only a small bump, just a scratch on them and a cracked numberplate on my side. But where do we go from here ? obviously id rather just pay them to get it resprayed or whatever

but they didnt seem the friendlyist of types, and ive got a feeling by their close inspection of my insurance documents, they dont trust me and will just go through the insurance

which is fine, but ive got a £600 excess, and cant see a quote for sorting 2 little scratches to be over £600. even whole rear bumper is only like £500 surely ?

so what happens if the 3rd party claim is less than the excess ?

You pay the full claim and any admin charges I think? You wont pay your full excess unless it is over that I would not have thought

ive just checked my policy details my £600 excess comprises £200 policy excess and £400 driver excess. The £200 one is the voluntary one

checked policy information, and it seems the £400 one is only mentioned in respect to damage to my car. Which obviously doesnt concern me because all ive got is a £10 numberplate to change.

least i think so, my policy documents are so confusing. but i dont want to ring and ask my insurers about what it is because that phone call will be taken as notification of the accident. which if im going to pay myself, kinda defeats the point of doing it myself.

With most insurers, you do not pay an excess on third party claims that are your fault. There is an exception to this - I think Bell charge you an excess for a third party claim on their Flexibell policy. I dont know of a single other insurer that does.

Who are you with?

HSBC through Swinton

if the third party claim is excess free, i may just let them claim through the insurance.

only question is, with 3 years no claims, how much will i lose, 1,2 or all 3 ? and do i lose the NCB with immediate effect, and i have to pay up the difference to what my policy will cost for the rest of the duration with only 1 years ncb ?

or does it just mean my rewewal wont be cheaper.
