I went to boot up my PS3 today to play some games that I picked up, but my PS3 dualshock 3 controller has unfortunately died on me as soon as I go to play :(

I hardly play my PS3, but I want to replay some of the exclusives I missed out on when I moved to PC gaming as I can pick them up for cheap now as this generation is drawing to a close.

The official controllers are £40-50 which is way too much as I'm only going to playing for a bit, so I looked at third party ones. I'm currently looking at the Afterglow wired controller which can be had for cheap and has good reviews (a quick search came up with a review from IGN saying that it's one of the best 3rd party controllers.)

Are there any other ones before I purchase this one? Thanks :)

What do you mean by 'died on you'? I only ask as mine had a weird episode a while back where all the lights on the back would flash but the controller wouldn't work. I fixed it by prodding the indented reset button on the back with a toothpick.

I recently bought a power A controller from Argos for £20. It has sticks in the same position as the 360 pad. It's actually pretty decent BUT it doesn't have sixaxis sensors in which turned out to be a pain in The Last Of Us when you have to shake the controller to recharge your flash light.

Hori, as far as I know are the only 3rd party company that makes Sony licensed controllers.. They are very good, I have a fighters stick, FPS assault pad and the fighters pad which are more of specialist controllers, but they do make more generic ones.

Having said that, DS3 is the best generic controller and the cheapest place I've seen them sold is at granger games. There is some ultimate combo packs that Sony have seem to release in every country but not here that includes a controller with a game. I'm looking for the god of war saga pack that has a red controller; but the prices of them, as they not be official released yet are crazy online at the moment.

Just purchase a pre-owned Dualshock 3/PS3 Controller. Alternatively, you could also look in the 'Members Market' due to your level of posts in the Overclockers forum.

I just got back from town and had a quick look in game, the only decent looking controllers they had were the afterglow AP. 2 and the Gioteck GC2, both around £20. which would you say is the better controller, as i've just found a voucher for game when i returned some stuff a while back, or is there any other controllers which I should just get instead? Thanks.

The issue with the after market ones, is they use a dongle, so for games like FPS have input lag, i tried a Giotek one and a power A pad and both were awful for dead zones.

I would still go with buying a pre owned DS3.

Any other suggestions? I'll probably buy the Afterglow AP 2, seems pretty good and I can pick it up at my local store.

Maybe you could take your controller into GAME and ask them for advice and maybe you may be able to get in touch with Sony. :)

And have a suggested repair or replacement.

How long have you actually had the controller?

3rd party controllers lack features and will also lack many other things. Plus, I have experienced using 3rd party controllers for consoles and they lack timing with pressing a button and waiting for the action displayed on the screen.

The Playstation 3 (Dualshock 3) controller is designed to deliver the best performance in a number of ways starting from comfort and ending in perfect timing as well as accuracy.

You can also look in 'members market' like I and quote 'Psycho Sonny' have said.
