I am looking to get a 3TB drive to replace a 1TB storage drive that I have had for a couple of years now.

I am running on an Abit IP35 with windows 7 x64 on an M4 SSD in ACHI mode

From reading around the internet I think that this should be OK for use as a storage drive but I will have to do "convert to a GPT disk" from the windows disk manager

Can anyone confirm that I will be able to run a 3TB drive ?

Thanks

I believe it can be done assuming:

You are using an up-to-date BIOS.
An Intel SATA Port
The latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers supported by your board.
GPT partitioning. (You should not need to do a convert. Just partition straight into GPT)

You will not be able to boot from it.

If it is an advanced format (4K) drive make sure you align it properly. Windows 7 should format it correctly but check.

Thanks for the reply

My BIOS is pretty old and as Abit seems pretty dead now I dont fancy chances of getting a new BIOS. When I looked at the abit site in January (when it was still there) there wasnt a recent BIOS available though.

My SATA is: 6x SATA 3Gb/s connectors offered by Intel ICH9R support Intel Matrix Storage Tech (AHCI & RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10).

Just installed latest Intel chipset drivers from their site.

So bottom line, not really sure if it will work or not.

This thread has something about it with an IP35pro - http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1153649
