£4,000+ for a GPU - Madness !!

I was just having a look at what the prices we're doing for 5090s and I could hardly believe it when I saw that they're all round about four grand or four grand plus which is just crazy I knew prices were bad but I had no idea they were just this bad for GPUs.

The cheapest one with availability is sitting at just under £3,750 and the most expensive available is £5,400

in all my years of building PCs I don't think I've ever seen a time where the prices for the same tech has basically doubled over the last 12 months

I paid £1,879 for my Gamerock in May 2025 and I was wincing at that....

Yep. Paying £2400 for a discretionary video game and LLM toy early last year was maybe not my best decision on the whole, but it's looking better and better every month. I haven't even used the thing for a month.

This has really gotten out of control. The bubble needs to pop.

And yes, this price explosion for components is unprecedented in the last 30+ years I've been working with PCs.
 
They're no longer being sold to the gamers.

Professional Content creators and AI users are the market. Most of them will be billed as a business expense (which will get them the 20% VAT refund for starters) and then a write down on their tax bill for depreciation of assets used for their buisness.

For the now intended purchaser of 5090s the cost isn't anywhere near as bad as the headline price suggests.

I imagine if all 6090 was released now it would be atleast these prices. I've a feeling you would be on of those that would still buy it hahaha.
 
Don’t care but no GPU is worth £4k for playing games on ultra vs saving £3.3k and grabbing a second hand 4080 or 9070 XT and just playing very high instead… madness what people would pay.
 
My 5090 FE feels like a bargain from a bygone era. Only cost me a few hundred following the resale of my previous GPU. AAA games these days aren't worth an outlay of £3-4K+
 
It is crazy, that you can get a full system with a 5080 for less than a 5090.

I think the focus changed, before gamers would buy a Titan or xx90s to get the extra oomph, nowadays I think professionals are using the 5090s
 
It’s not going to go on forever…. However much longer I’m obviously not sure, but this whole situation has reached a point where it’s going to collapse.
 
According to industry types it is going to get worse due to useless AI data centres hoovering up components, these prices may become the norm. If they do, PC gaming will go the way of the dodo.

Lets wait and see.. The AI companies and hyperscalers have got into so much debt ($2-3 trillion) there's no way they can make a profit on this stuff anymore, it's almost impossible - the money spent and debt created is so high, it simply can't turn a profit.
 
Can’t wait for them to come begging with a £1000 7090 when everything crashes.

Always expect the worst so you can never be disappointed.
 
Over 40 years I've been into tech and this is the only time in history being a early adopter worked out.

PS5 and PS5 Pro
Xbox Series X
5090 GPU
Switch 2 (going up soon )

Are all tech I purchased on release and cost more now that it did back then .

It's already going that way and has been for years.

If think of now, and say when half life 2 was released, hardware was constantly and rapidly improving, newer more advanced games were coming out. Hardware was affordable.

Half life 2 was released 22 years ago.....

I'm not sure exactly and what time it peaked, maybe after that, but at some point in time it did and it's been declining since.

The games industry is going down the toilet, development companies are being swallowed up, and then shut down, people are being made redundant with no hopes of finding similar roles.

Hardware prices have been horrific since 2020, that's 6 years now.
