4 pin to 3 pin cpu fan

was after putting a noctua on my cpu cooler but it only has 3 pin connection,now can i still connect it to my cpu 4 pin connection and would it still work, but it wont be able to control the speed is that right,and if so i can just fit one of the cables i got with the noctua to run it a 5v and lower the speed that way,am i right in thinking this would be fine any advice please

Yes you can connect it to the the CPU header andf you should still be able to control the speed as the motherboard should be able to alter the speed the old fashioned way by altering the voltage. You might have to change a setting in the bios though.
