I'm thinking of buying two Western Digital Caviar Black 4TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD4003FZEX) HDD's.

Can anyone comment on these units compared with alternatives.

These are OEM units with a 5 year limited warranty.

Does this mean returning to the manufacturer or retailer ie OCUK.

If the manufacturer, is this straightforward within the UK.

Edit: What does 'Limited Warranty' mean in this context.

Direct to the manufacturer is the likely to be the fastest return, at least after the first 6 months.

'Limited Warranty' means your only covered for the hard drive, you won't get anything for lost data or any other losses as a result of the drive failing.

I "think" they are the fastest non-enterprise 4TB drives at the moment, but your paying the premium price for that 5 year warrantee.

I was having reservations about the relatively high cost of these units and as you suggest some of that is no doubt down to the 5 year warranty.

I'm looking at the Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 as an alternative.

Thank you.

I love the Hitatchi Deskstars. we have loads of these in various NAS/SAN devices in the company and the failure rate is virtually nil. The 1TB's have been running for 4 years without issue and we have only replaced 1 out of 48 so far. not bad eh.

I can also vouch for Hitatchi's RMA procedue. you always get a disk back the same week. (the 7 we have ever sent back have always RMA the same week) thats 7 drives over 5 yeasrs, and we have 200+ drives spinning 24/7.
