4 x AAA to power usb device ?

yes thats right i could, and it be the same type it replaced! and therfore last just as long as the first.

But as i said it dont really matter what the device is at the end of the day

You can get much larger capacity batteries than that for a decent camera.

3,600mAh is not uncommon.

By the way 4x800mAh != 3,200mAh at 5v. It's just 800mAh.

Using AAA batteries is a bad idea because they are so low capacity.

I imagine that's simply adding a 5V voltage regulator into the circuit. Packaged into a nice case of course :)

I'm afraid not as voltage regulators need a couple of volts above the target voltage. In the case of a 5v regulator you may need as much as 7v before you actually get a 5v reading. And besides voltage regulators are very inneficient and waste a lot of energy. Nice idea though.

It's not ideal using batteries to charge a device as the voltage drops as the energy is consumed but is ok as a top up. I certainly would be looking towards AA batteries as it's more likely to maintain good voltage while it fills up the 620mAh but if AAA works then all well and good.

Just make sure the batteries don't get too warm as you transfer the energy as you could damage them. The charging circuit should have some sort of current protection but it's best to be safe.

Sorry folks,
feel like i'v wasted your time on this one.

been doing more testing tonight & i'v hit a brick wall.
might admit defeat and change my plan to....

removing the internal battery and run a little power lead out of it and connect it up to the made battery pack, although only use 3 aaa's as the internal battery is 3.7 volt.

Will have to try and find another box/pack that holds 3 instead of 4

Thanks to you all for trying to help ;)

I use one these to charge my USB devices when am out

Have ordered one.

Thanks for drawing my attention to this! The 4xAA USB chargers that I have come across are normally cheap and crappy.

4xAA can offer a lot of power if combined with a decent circuit.

Look forward to receiving mine and shall report my findings!.. Thanks again! :)
