Hi eveyone. I was try to put together a budget build based on AMD but everywhere I look I'm told not to bother. so I'm thinking about Intel now, the i5 2500k seems to be most peoples choice.

I've got a budget of £400 for a cpu,mobo,hd,case/psu,8gb ram,dvd drive.

Is it possible? I'm confused about what ram to buy, can someone help pick the hardware?

Thanks

If your planning on adding a dedicated graphics card at a later date for gaming and money is tight, get 4GB of RAM instead of 8GB and put it towards a better PSU such as the 550W OCZ ZS one on this week only offer.

Presumably you don't need OS, otherwise can't be done in budget.

If you planning of overclocking, may as well get the aftermarket cooler sooner rather than later as it'd save you a bit of hassle.

oh, can i ask a question regarding ram and the speed it runs at? does intel use triple or dual channel? what are you looking for when buying ram?
and whats the deal with chipsets for the 1155 socket? theres three different chipsets.
im confused.
thanks.

Intel uses both dual and triple channel, the type is defined by the particular chipset, the newest being Z68 uses dual channel.

There was a great thread where all the Intel chipsets were explained recently. But the long story short is with a 2500K just go Z68, more future proof and all the newest features.

But the cheapest (within reason) 1600MHZ Ram there is, good deals on Crucial currently. With a SandyBridge the RAM is less important, 4-8gig is a good amount.

It was only Intel socket 1366 that used tripple channel memory. Sandy Bridge uses dual channel RAM.

As for three chipsets, presumably you mean H61/H67, P67 and Z68?

All are slightly different. H61/67 allows you to use the integrated graphics card but you cant overclock, P67 is vice versa and Z68 allows both (along with a couple of other features such as Lucid Virtu and Intel Smart Response). Seeing as you already have a 6870, then I'd go for the Z68 board as with BIOS update will be Ivy Bridge compatible but get a slightly larger PSU. Also, if you'd ever consider going Xfire then get a Xfire compatible board.
