I was thinking of sticking with the retail one at first and seeing how it faired - or are they really not worth their weight in steel?

Well, they're usable. By all means try it out first then if it's too noisy or poor at cooling then replace it. It's just easier to install a different one to begin with, since you'd have to go through the whole business of removing and replacing the thermal paste...
