A mate of mine wants a gaming pc for under £500..

He doesn't really play many games so really it would be pointless spending too much on it. Whats the best spec for this sort of price. I'm looking myself, but other peoples views are appreciated :)

Thanks

I realise that budget may be a little low, hence no replies.. So I've convinced him to up his budget to £500. Any ideas?

I don't think the budget is too low at all. Ok it's not going to be cutting edge stuff, but £400 for no OS and minimal HDD leaves a reasonable amount.

so pretty high res.
a bit over budget, so possibly play with psu/case

Add a 500GB HDD for ~£40 and an optical drive for about ~£15, you may always change Antec case to a cheaper Coolermaster and get more expensive cooling.

Thanks a lot for the replies so far. Opened me up to options I hadn't thought of at all.
650W seems quite high for paradisiac's build, the i3 and 5770 are supposed to be low power. What's the lowest I should go PSU wise?

This is what I would get:

Phenom II X2 550BE ~ £72

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-249-AM

This has an unlocked multiplier making overclocking easier.

Asus M4A78L-M LE ~ £47

4GB 1066MHZ DDR2 ~ £68

Samsung F3 500GB ~ £40

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-081-SA

This disk is single platter and faster than most similarly price hard drives

Sony Optiarc AD-7240S ~ £17

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-038-OT&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=

Coolermaster Elite 334 ~ £28

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-184-CM&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=

OCZ StealthXStream 500w ~ £43

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-026-OC

OcUK Value GeForce GTS 250 1024MB ~ £80

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-113-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=

The build comes to around £410 including postage.

If you can get the following card it would be a decent performance increase over the GTS250 1024MB:

One of these motherboards would be a good upgrade from the one I listed before:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-376-AS

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-180-GI

You maybe able to unlock the X2 550BE to a quad core if you are lucky with any of the motherboards I have linked to:

However the more expensive motherboards are better specified and more likely to have better overclocked options in the BIOS.
