Hi, need a spec check for a mate. He will be gaming mostly.

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTB OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

Total : £466.37

Can anyone get this a bit cheaper?

Thanks.

waht games does he play and at what res?

quads dont really give much of a performance boost in most games currently

also what is he upgrading from?

Alright, so maybe one of the better Dual cores? E6xxx?

He's upgrading from a Pentium 4, and 6800 lol.

Already have a spare PSU, which is 520w.

Is the Q6600 really necessary? As jak731 says they aren't utilised that fully by games just yet. You might also find that a cheaper 8800GT would be a better overall option since the budget appears to be important.

//edit if willing to overclock then an E2180 or E2200 is probably the best option. If not then an E6550 or E6750 would lower the price a bit.

so Q6600 aint all that good for gamings, so cant games use all 4 cores yet??
least if i know that itll save me £100 if i get an e2200 or 2180

Yeah, I wasn't too sure on the quad either.

And doubt he will be clocking so the 6--- look more tempting. Any idea why the E6750 is cheaper than the E6600? Searched and can't find anything.

What cooler would you recommend? I've heard good things about the Freezer 7 Pro.

Just noticed actually.

The E6600 has 1066FSB while the E6750 has 1033

Does it really matter though?

The E6750 has a 1333mhz FSB or is meant to unless there is a typo in the site. The E6600 is an older chip and the newer E6X50 range are easier to produce in numbers so it is lower in price partly because of the easier manufacturing but also because not all motherboards can handle the 1333mhz FSB so the price of some 1066mhz FSB chips can stay a bit higher. This information is mostly guesswork but I think quite reasonable guesswork.

The Freezer 7 Pro is quite decent, especially for a 'budget' cooler but if there isn't going to be any overclocking the stock cooler should be fine.

Great. Thanks mate.

Final check

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (This week)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.66GHz (1333FSB) - Retail
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

Went for BFG because of their warranty, plus it's only £5 more.
