Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my system, and wondering what the best way to go about it would be. This is what I currently have:

AMD A8-3870 APU @ 3.0Ghz
Gigabyte A55M-DS2 A55 Chipset (FM1)
G.Skill RibJawsX 8GB 1600MHz
Corsair 600W PSU of some sort
500GB Seagate HDD 7200RPM

I know a new graphics card would be needed, and an SSD would help a lot. Is my processor okay for now? The aim of the system is to play/stream Dota2 in 720p.

Thanks!

Something like this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI Radeon R9 270X HAWK OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £155.99
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £139.99
1 x Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 AMD 990X (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
1 x Kingston HyperX 3K SSD 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (SH103S3/120G) £65.99
Total : £481.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If you can sell the APU and motherboard you currently have, it would give you some money back so it wouldn't be to much over your budget.

What case do you have?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus Radeon R9 280X DirectCUII TOP 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £259.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £119.99
Total : £389.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Do you not think my CPU will throttle my ability to stream in 720p?

I was reading that some of the Nvidia cards like the 750ti have a built in service which takes the load of of the CPU whilst streaming and places it more on the GPU, perhaps I would be better getting an Nvidia card with that feature?

I'm currently using this case: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-063-OP but I will upgrade it soon.

I know that it is a little bit over your budget but considering you can get free shipping I think that it may be worth spending the extra money.

I'm not sure the people who posted above read the initial post completely.
He said he wanted to play/stream dota 2 at 720p this does not require spending anywhere near £400.

Dota 2 is very easy to run on high settings.
At 720p it is even easier. From this benchmark you see that at a 1680x1050, even higher than 720p a 650 gets 62+ fps at highest settings.
So if 720p dota 2 is your maximum requirments your best bet would be to get a second hand card like the nvidia gtx 460(better than 7770) which sells on the bay for around £45. If you wanted new a AMD r7 250(10% worse than a AMD 7750) will cost around £60. The 460 will be significantly better so I would recommend trying to pick one of those up. It also overclocks like a beast 20%+, I know because my brother owns one. This GPU will be overkill for what you want to do but is still very cheap.

Now if you want to instead play new games at high quality at 1080p 60fps then I would recommend a AMD R9 270 for £125.
It has the best value out of all the cards especially as it will overclock to 270x performance with no effort.

So your integrated graphics would be up to the task.
Unfortunately, your cpu will not be upto 720p streaming. An 8 core AMD cpu should be more than up to the job. It will also do very with a very good GPU in all games.
I would recommend you get an AMD 8320(£97.25 if you go on google shopping) with a cheap £40 micro atx motherboard like the ASRock 960GM/U3S3.
I do not recommend overclocking as it requires a more expensive motherboard + cooler but it is an option to spend £20 more on a motherboard now and then buy a cooler later when you need more performance.

For around £185 you would be easily over your goal.
Parts:
AMD 8320 CPU ~£100
460 1GB Second hand ~£45
ASRock 960GM/U3S3 ~£40
(Unfortuantly none of these prices are from overclockers as they either are not competitive or do not stock the item)

As for an SSD it will not improve game-play or streaming but will improve your pc for general use with reduced application loading times.
I would recommend a 120GB Crucial M500 (£55).
Be aware that the 240GB version is available for £30 more from the rainforest so offers much better value, but you really only need the extra space if you want to store a lot of games on it.

Feel free to pm me if you want some extra help

Completely forgot about nvidia shadowplay. A gtx 650(£70) should be enough for 720p dota2 streaming. If you want more performance and much better value I would recommend a 750ti for £100.
The beauty of shadowplay is that it puts no stress on the cpu so your apu should be fine for dota2.
Of course if you want to play other more stressful games then a better cpu would be better.

If it was me I'd go for Bart's spec, a more solid investment. Why buy a 460? Just invest that little extra now and you will be set for a few years, you don't know what you might be playing/streaming in a years time, and a 270x/280 and an 8320 is where I'd be at. Hell even save some cash, go for an fx6300

Here we go, a sound upgrade with gigabyte board and card for uk Rma etc

Here's the 270x vs the 760, nvidia card is slightly better in most games and has shadow play?
