MY 400d finally arrived today, set it all up, slotted in the battery and it worked a charm.

Tried taking a pic and I got a message saying 'error 99', reinstall battery. The battery indicator was displaying full though.

Then, all power went off. I couldn't turn it back on and just assumed the battery was dead as I hadn't charged it out of the box.

I had the battery on charge for 30 mins and the green 'battery full' indicator came on on the charger. So I installed it and now the camera wont fire up anymore :(

I've put the battery back on charge but the green light is coming on on the charger after about 2 mins or so.

Any ideas how to get this working as I really CBA to repack it all up and return it.

Meh

Thanks in advance

try removing the backup data battery inside the battery compartment for about 5 minutes and then put it back and try again.

It will get warm during charge - all batteries get warm whilst charging :)

Sounds like a duff battery though, could you possibly take it to a local camera shop so you can quickly test one of their display body batteries and vice versa ?

I will pick up a spare battery in town tomorrow, take my current battery with me and ask them to see..I really don't want to go through the hassle of returning it and be without a camera this weekend

Looks like it is either the battery or the charger. Took the battery into a camera shop and they tried it in their camera. Didn't work so have bought a spare battery to try so I can play with my new toy.

Thanks all for your help.

Li-Ion batteries do not and should not get hot while charging. Certainly, none of mine do, and i have loads of them.

Is there any way I can 'trick' the charger into thinking the battery is empty? The one that came to the camera registers as full in the charger after a few mins and it clearly is not. If I can't, I will just RMA it to Canon.

The spare I got today is charging nicely so fingers crossed it will all be okay :)

Meh... there must be something up with the charger as it still wont work. Camera is just dead as a doornail.

RMA time tomorrow.

Can someone check I am not being a numpty and confirm what I am doing is right:

1. Attach lens
2. Insert CF card
3. Charge battery- it goes orange while charging then green
4. Insert battery
5 Power up.....well it should power up but nothing happens :(

is the battery actually dead? do you have a multimeter to hand to test it? tbh it sounds like a camera fault, not the battery. i dont get error 99 on my 400d when the battery is flat, it just flashes up the battery icon and shuts down.

Haven't got a multimeter but took it into the local camera shop today and tried it in a 400d. The camera didn't fire up at all, just like mine so both me and the shop guy assumed that it must be the battery and I got a new one.

I charged the new one and have got the same result i.e. nothing happening on power up.

I can only assume the charger must be faulty somehow and it is nuking the batteries...

I only got the error 99 on first use of the camera with the little bit of juice the shipped batery came with.

Either way it's all going back tomorrow. Right pain as I wanted to play with it this weekend :(

oooooh right. oh in that case i think you're right, it's the charger either nuking the battery (not really likely) or its just not charging them at all.

What is bizzare is that the charger is reporting the battery is fully charged. Not quite sure how it all works though, could it make the battery report fully charged without actually giving it any juice?

Meh. I just wanted to take some pics lol
