Care to back that up with any facts? ;)

Care to back that up with any facts? ;)

 Why would I need facts when I know it to be true from Real life experience ?
I s'pose I could get the Taxi drivers I know to post on there experiences with them & why they binned them off the Fleet asap. :p
At least you won't be bias though a. :D

My father had the 2.2 or 2.1 (can never remember the engine size) HDi Coupe, fully loaded with all the toys. Apart from the particle filter causing a bit of problems it was a sublime car, ate the miles, comfy, and surprisingly spacious, and returned great MPG. Plus it's stunning.

As for the basic 406, not much bad to report about it. It's just a toss up between 406 and Mondeo really in terms of looks - I'd choose the 406 personally.

If its an HDi it'll be a 2.2.

A friend has one too, pretty much identical to the one cloudly posted. Very comfortable, relatively quick, economical and not as bad inside as you'd think.

He's only had trouble with the DPF too..

My dad had one from new until last year, was a great car. Nothing went wrong bar the lights in the dash blew. Had climate, rain sensitive wipers etc and was a great load carrier.

How many have you personally owned? It's got nothing to do with bias - I'm stating facts.

I don't mean to sound like an uninformed hater of all things french, but my mates 406 has been nothing but trouble. His wife's Citroen is also problematic and I have owned a Citroen and would, never again. Does that help? ;)

Sounds like you all 3 failed with inspecting the cars before buying and checking it over properly tbh.

Thought I would revive this thread instead of starting a new one :)
Anyone got any experience/knowledge of the petrol 2L Auto versions of this?

No idea on auto but iirc the 406 ( or was that the 407??) shares the same engine 2.0 petrol as the Citroen C5. Dad has one, faultless engine so far, bought at 173k km iirc now 14 months later, still going strong/no sign of degrading @ 238 k kilometers. Only service to the car has been replace the petrol pump ( destroyed due to own fault though), new front pads and an oil change.

I have had two 406 diesels 2.1, solid XUD engines although let down by the electrics as with most french cars.

The ride was fairly comfy although they roll in the corners allot, massive car though auto wipers work suprisingly well.
Did have a injection pump failure but this was a fuelling issue the standard injection pump didn't like the vegetable oil I was feeeding her, changed it for a bosch off a 405 worked a treat.
All round not a bad car although the suspension lets it down. Can't say I had many issues that wern't related to the fuel (veg).
Moved over to a mk3 mondeo I feel is a much better car much better suspension although finding the old 406 had issues but generally a simple fix.

Things to look for interier fan don't alway work on all speed normally only the faster speeds, this is due to a faulty control board located next to the fan motor, easily replaced.

Also the speedo just doesn't work or wavers , this is either solering on the speedo board or the speed control module located near the passenger footwell.

The multi changers only seem to work with printed cds.
Did have a small leak in the boot although only on one.

406 diesels aren't doing great mpg right? Based on some car data, diesel averaged of around 42 mpg. It has a big tank though.

Massive tank 70 litres
I was getting around 40mpg on diesel, slightly less on vegetable oil although that was free :D

not that I cared for economy, running my replacement car on pump diesel what a shock  was speeding around £10 a month on diesel for about 500 miles on the 406.

always found Peugeot seats very uncomfortable on long runs ( far too soft )

then again being French it will prob break down before you get uncomfortable :p

I've just gone from a 406 r reg, to a mk3 mondeo.

I found the 406 allot softer suspension and the seats too soft, only reminded of it when mentioned earlier in this thread.

The mondeo is quicker and suits my driving style better found the 406 a bit of an old mans car now :p although the turbo cut in allot later on the mondeo I do miss the mid range power on the 406.

Well, it's NA petrol, automatic and I am an old man, so I shall take another look ;)
Its up at £795 ono, needs two front tyres (they are legal but not up to my spec) tiny crack in a rear lens so Im might try at £650, certainly not more than £700, even if it is, apparently, priced well below average.
