So after xmas is out of the way i want to spend a bit on the PC

One of the upgrades id like is my 4080S. I feel a 5080 might be similar performance so that only leaves the 5090.

I do game at 4K but im still trying to convince myself that its money well spent as even with the money id get back the 4080S its gonna cost a bomb

So please talk me out of it :p

It's literally just the 5090, and this late into the game you might as well wait for the 6000 series and ignore the refresh of the 5000.

Maybe if you can find a good deal on a second hand 4090 on the MM?

Considering its about the 4th best GPU in the world there is not much options on upgrading it. And if you do it will eat electric and turn your PC into a heater while making your wallet much lighter at the same time.

6000 series as already mentioned. Also as above I played with a RTX 5090 for a day and it basically used twice as much energy but didn't achieve twice the performance. I'll stick to my 4080 FE. DLSS 4 + Frame insertion has been the biggest boon to this strategy.

The 5080 super is due just after ces in January but not sure even if that would be a big enough performance uplift over your 4080

5000 series has MFG so that may help if you like fake frames but after that it's a 5090.

For what it'd cost and for what difference you could actually see, 100% not worth it.

I'm in the same boat, the 5090 isn't worth going for in my opinion. People talk about driver issues with Nvidia, I think it's a mix of that and sometimes incompatible hardware after AIBs have created their own cards. There's just something not quite right about the 5000 series in some cases, albeit not as many cases as some would have you believe. Could also be certain hardware combos that have these issues. It's not good enough from them though, after years of good hardware.

This 4080 Super is turning out to be a better purchase the longer we go on. Massively overengineered cooler, which I love, and hardware that seems very sound. I've had no driver issues either and it really does perform well at my preferred 1440p resolution.

The OP's cash would be better spent on Freddos and hookas. Or the more sensible suggestions above.

Just my opinion, others may have arguments to the contrary.

Buy a 5090, I had 1080TI SLI before I bought a 4090 and that was a huge upgrade. I sold the 4090 for £60 less than I paid for it and I'm pretty sure my 5090 ( and yours) will hold its value far better than the lower cards with their limited AI/LLM potential. It will cost a lot but you will probably get 75%-110% of it back (ignoring inflation) in 3 years. And it means every game you play you can crank it to the max (ish). I went from a 4090 to a 5090 and for £700 it definitely was worth it. We can always dial down settings but the older you get the less time you have to enjoy it looking as good as it can. A new pair of prescription spectacles are often cheaper and better than a GPU upgrade btw...:).
