Hello all,

I'm looking to upgrade to a 4090 setup and need some advice on a few components.

I'd like to build in the Fractal North case, and obviously a 4090, but other than that i'm up for recommendations. I don't need any storage as that will move from my current build, nor do I need Windows etc. Just pure components.

Also, is the 4090 FE a good purchase for this over the after market card at all? They seem to be back in stock with Nvidia.

Budget is around £2500 but don't mind saving some money if it's not needing to be spent.

If it was me I'd go with the FE, nice card and would go well with your Fractal North case I think. I'm assuming you are gaming with this? If so I'd go 7800X3D and a decent B650 mother board - approx £200. I wouldn't worry about PCIE 5 slots too much at this point. By the time it is relevant things will have moved on a lot. Add in 32GB (2x16GB) of DDR5 6000MHz RAM £140. Cooler can be a an AIO, I like the Arctic Freezer II or something like a Peerless Assassin air cooler £30. So doable for under £400 and not really giving anything up for gaming.

Thanks for this! Really helpful. I'm not losing out on much using the FE over the aftermarket cards am I? I agree the aesthetics of it are quite nice.

If your set on the North I would recommend air cooling over a AIO

Thanks. Why is that? I've seen builds with both.

You can make a AIO work in that case but can run into fitment issues especially with bigger cards due to mounting the rad at the front, the go to for that case seems to be the NH-U12A (as most builds seem to use the Noctua fan colour to their advantage)

I'll let the 4090 experts answer this but I've rarely seen a huge benefit for the fancier models as far as performance is concerned for the added cost. The FE has a very good cooler as standard. Unless you are chasing benchmarks scores you'll never notice the difference.

I'll have a look at the Zotac card. Either seems ok but the warranty does feel an important kicker.

Does anyone have a preference on motherboard, PSU and RAM? i've had a look around Troezar's kind recommendation but want to make sure i'm not missing out on a worldy.

There are a few options depending on what you want to spend. I'm happy with my B650 Gaming X AX but you may want more bells and whistles. I used Kingston Fury Beast RAM 6000MHZ C36 and it's all stable.

All I'd say on a PSU is buy a quality one. I'd got for 1000W but others @Tetras will be able to give you a specific model.

Intel alternative:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £2,491.88 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Cooler: this (under £50).

With AM5, something like the Tomahawk is more than fine, but I'd consider the B650E-F if you want PCI-E 5.0 graphics.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £2,586.84 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Cooler: this (under £50).

thanks for that @Tetras

i'm looking to build in the fractal north unfortunately, and i think the zotac isn't going to fit. i will take the other components in mind, however!

The MSI cards are shorter in their tech spec, but if that's realistically short enough, I don't know. This might be informative?

The Seasonic PSU is fairly compact so should fit even with the HDD tray. If you're not using it, then it doesn't matter.

The cooler above is within 170mm (height restriction) if you're not using the fan bracket.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £2,567.86 (includes delivery: £7.99)

Same cooler as the other two builds.
