40gb data cap - how hard is this to live with?

You'll go over your cap in under 2hrs of downloading flat out.

I don't see the point in paying for fibre if you can only download very limited amounts.
 
Maybe you do, but that's not normal domestic usage. The only time I'd hit anything near 40GB in a day is if I needed to download multiple .ISO images from TechNet, or needed to patch multiple PCs from scratch.
 
50-100GB a month is a world away from the 1.2TB a month Minstadave is claiming.

I personably average about 90GB a month. If most of my streaming was removed from that by using BT Vision, it wouldn't be that hard to get down somewhere near the 40GB a month the OP was asking about.
 
I think 40-50gb is my weekly usage.
I tend to download games from steam a lot, sometimes that over 5gb+ some dlc/updates.
I have a basic Sky unlimited, paying 25£ a month.
Max download speed at 2mb/s. I think I have a fibre in my area, but so far couldn't find any reason to justify upgrading to it.

People use the internet differently, I don't know why this concept is hard for you.

The main point here is what is the point in paying extra for fibre when you can't really use it? If you're not downloading decent amounts the speed doesn't really benefit you, so why bother paying for it? Why not just get cheaper ADSL2?

The best broadband package + TV vs basic infinity + TV are £1 different in price.

+ the tv package with infinity is better and I don't think you get BT sport on the tv without choosing infinity.

I am not a big downloader. I think I will find the cap a bit restrictive, but I am going to try and live with it for a few months. I can always upgrade later. As we are moving in to a new house it makes sense to get the fibre installed now.
 
My advice if you do go ahead and go for the 40gb cap is to look at your usage every day on the "my BT" section it's probably best to do it twice too morning and evening.

Might seem excessive but i've heard some horror stories before regarding the cap.

You are basically just buying this for the TV package. But you ask advice on the internet aspect of it, then ignore all advice just because of the TV package.

No - the advice was valuable, I now know that the 40gb cap will be hard to live with, therefore I am pre - warned that it is likely that I will need to upgrade the package at some point.

Considering you've said it's quite a bit more expensive, what is it offering that you wouldn't get with sky or something similar? Wouldn't the cost ultimately end up being around about the same?
 
BT infinity 1 is £15 + £5 for Bt vision. Line rental is £12.50. Bt sport is free.

I doubt you could get a sky package that would include fibre and any football, for a comparable price.
 
Just downloading Arma2/OA+Epoch and patches is 25GB alone, christ I couldn't live with a 40gb limit!

I've actually just gone for that package. Our cabinet has only recently been upgraded to fibre. Because of line length best we could achieve was 2mb ish, as it was nigh on hopeless I stuck with a 10Gig limit.

Not that fussed (as yet) over limits it's just (hopefully) going to be wonderful to get 38Mb. Even with my 10Gig limit I only exceeded it twice in I don't know how many years, so 40Gig sounds huge. Obviously it may change my browsing/download habits but I can always look at upgrading. I would sooner go with a smaller limit and upgrade if necessary than dive in and have a larger package that's not really used. It's horses for courses I suppose. Plus I'm skint and tight.. :-)

The first time you exceed your limit, BT give you a slap on the wrist and tell you they will charge next time, you get throttled at this point iirc. After that you get charged x amount for yGB (I forget)

e: 38.mbps is wonderful btw, especially when coming from <10mbps (I get 41 down and 18 up)

Whoo Hoo.. I've literally just had an email from BT to tell me my "Home Hub 5" will be with me on the 3rd. He he.. happy days..:)
