I was helping a friend to image his hard drive recently and I noticed a huge discrepancy between the used space and the total amount of data on the hard drive.
He's using Vista64 and has a single 250GB partition.
The used space was reported as 100GB (observed by opening Computer and looking at the used/free space listed by the icon for the C: drive)
The total amount of data was reported as 60GB. (observed by going to the root of the C: drive and selecting all files (including hidden) and selecting 'properties' from context menu)
I'm not at the PC at the moment and I have no idea what cluster size is being used, but suspect it will be the installation default.
Is this huge discrepancy likely to be cluster slack? Or is it suggesting a filesystem problem? Could it be a fragmentation problem?
I guess I should take a look with SANDRA or some other diagnostic tool, any recommendations?
