40GB PS3 features 65nm chips

My PS3 has been quite loud when i've been watching DVD's & Blue-ray movies. Actually quite annoyed me how loud it was, was suprised as it never used to be so loud...:(.

Mine too, level 3 fan noise is pretty significant, almost matches the 360, it just doesnt have that whine that changes pitch in the 360 fans.

I don't follow that logic Frank..

All MS consoles give you the 'option' of BC, it's just that in the case of the CORE, you need to buy an accessory (HDD) to get BC..

With Sony, you either buy it with/without, and if you buy it without you can't get BC at all, ever..

Seems to me like MS give you a much better choice? or am I missing something?

You are missing the point that on release this wasnt on the hdd - and for £70 thats a huge price to pay for BC (which certainly for a long time didnt work very well at all)

haha, Whoops. Missed that, But thanks :D

As I've said already, Although I have a slimline PS2, I'd rather just have the 1 console for PS games. So i'll be looking out for the 60gb version. or 80gb if that includes it still?

40gb is a bargain, If you don't mind keeping your PS2 obviously. Or don't mind losing the Back catalogue

The 40gb is not a bargain at £299 when you can buy the 60gb at £349 with two free games and bc.

Can someone point out to me the differences between the 40gb model and the premium 60gb model?

Simply link to a good article or other thread if need be! Thanks!

The 40GB Playstation 3s are using 90nm chips but are still cooler and more power efficient than other SKUs.

We'd been hearing that Sony's new 40GB PS3 featured a revised design with a 65nm Cell processor and improved cooling, but sadly it looks like those reports were in error -- a Sony spokesperson has told Heise Online that the 40GB model continues to use 90mn processors, but does feature an updated design with a lower power consumption of just 120 to 140 watts, compared to 180 to 200 watts for the older models. Sony says its still planning on moving to 65nm processors in the near future, but for now, it looks like the PS3 is 90nm across the board.

Is it worth holding out for the 65nm version? Not too bothered about folding etc.. just gaming and movies.

If power consumption means a big deal to you then sure hang fire for the 65nm, but if your worried about the older models overheating, don't be, they simply don't overheat at all.

No, bar the pig ugly looks sony got the console hardware right straight from the start :)

If you want one I'd get one as soon as one comes up for a price you deem reasonable as they're very reliable.
