I'm deciding whether or not to buy a second hand 40gb ps3 but are they more prone to fail compared to the other 'fat' ps3?

Nothing worthy of note, no. I've got an early 40gb still going strong. The very first line of 40gbs seemed to have an iffy bluray diode (moreso than other units) however they were small in quantity and failed quickly so if it still works now it's unlikely it's one of those units.

not to put you off or anything (lol) but i've been through 3 of 40gb ps3's

first (brand new) lasted ~ 9 months, i think it ended getting weird graphical errors
second (refurb) lasted 1 day, same error... must have sent me a dodgy one
third (refurb) lasted ~ 1.5 years, got YLOD.

im currently without a ps3 :(

2+ years on mine, nothing yet.

That saying though, probaly around 30-40 hrs use time, so as with most things, it's posible the more you beat it, the more prone to failing, bar random luck ofcourse.

Have to say though, i probaly won't buy into a console again if failer rates go on as being as acceptable as they are today. No fun knowing you've spent hundreds on software and it's at the mercy of a failer on the hardware with need to buy in again... when the will might not be there.

I've had my "fat" PS3 for 2 years now and not had a single problem. Whereas my brother is now on his third fat PS3 as the blu ray drive failed on the last 2.Just like it has on this one now.

thanks for the replies guys. By the sounds of it the 40GB ps3 is a hit and miss, I think i will just get a brand new slim so that I get the 1 year warrenty

Wouldn't call it hit & miss, but in fairness they are getting on a bit now and you won't really know its past history. Mine is two years old and is going fine. If I was going to be a pre-owned one, it'd probably be 6 months old at the most.
