Hey guys

Moving to a new house where the Good Virgin and Sky packages (Fibre and Sky Unlimited) are not available. Basically I have to go with either providers "National" (read slow - phone line) service. We even get the privilege of paying them twice as much!

Both have a 40Gb limit to downloads. I guess my real question is do I need to find an ISP that will give us unlimited downloads.

Our monthly habits are mainly -

Facebook
Work emails
Personal Emails
Youtube
Game patches
Online gaming:
Warhammer Online (patches can be around 500mb) entire game is about 15gb
BFBC2

The only addition to this is that without Virgin TV we will be downloading a few bits and pieces from iPlayer and the like. At the moment we watch around 10 programs a week on catchup.

Will I go over the 40Gb limit do you think? All my previous ISPs have been unlimited downloads. I can pay Virgin £6 extra for the unlimited package but I am not sure if it would be cheaper getting BT and then O2 for instance, all depends on the 40Gb limit.

we can only get adsl and have sky up to 8mb, we get around 6.5mb. i dont think we have a download limit or if we do i have never hit it and i have downloaded way more than 40gb easy some months.

Game patches and Youtube won't get close to 40GB a month but watching stuff in HD on iPlayer and the like may well do. I think you'll be fine given those usage scenarios given in the Op.

Sky if not on their on loop is limited. If their equipemtn it's not.

I am in the same boat as the op. Nobody does unlimted. I am with NDO and pay a premium for a 100GB per month download package which is a bout the best I can get.

At home we have a 50gb limit, resets on the 9th and i think currently we are at about 90%. I have to save all my downloads, iplayer, youtube vids etc for after 11pm as that doesnt go towards the limit, it sucks.

Looking into it -

All with Sky - 40Gb Limit = £60

Sky TV with 40Gb Virgin = £52.64

Sky TV with Unlimited Virgin(s) = £58.64

As we are with Virgin at the moment (contact up on 24th Aug, moving on 6th) might just be worth sticking with them at the new place with the unlimited package. What do you think?

PS I both love and hate living in poxy growing villages! Why cant they put the services in when the street is built!!!!

40GB should be ok for that usage. Personally I'm on a Xilo 40GB peak package which is sufficient for similar usage to your intended (pull down a few hundred GB a month total but most of that is all scheduled off peak). It's £28 a month inc VAT, which sounds a lot, but that gets me prioritized service within BT's network and double the normal upload speeds as well as being a decent ISP with no noticeable peak time service deterioration. One month contract too.

I'd definitely go with a different provider anyway, both Sky and Virgins "national" service has rubbish performance. Saving a few quid isn't worth it if you can't play any online games in the evening due to lag and packet loss. You REALLY don't want to get locked into a 12 month contract that only works properly when you're asleep.

I've been very happy with BT. Torrents get throttled during peak times, but the internet is always quick and pings are always 100% reliable.

Afaik, there is not limit.. (maybe 100gb or something)?

again, until Sky LLU became available I was always very happy with my BT connection. Scheduled downloads between 12pm - 7am and I never managed to go over the limit. Even the homehub, though derided, never gave me any problems...
