Second thread on this, but getting close to the Rugby World Cup, and mum has let dad get a new 42-50" TV, as we have decided we might not go to the World Cup Final.

So, what lcd or plasma, do you recommend for upto £1.5k. Prefer lower, can go higher though, depending.

Also, wanting some more flat or more hidden surround sound, as ours are starting to take up too much room, and looking a bit naff. So what speaker and amp set up would you recommend? Cheaper the better preferably.

Seen a PHILIPS 50PFP5532 50" on offer at a well known high street shop, for £999. Any good?

Open to suggestions/ideas.

Thanks :)

Sorry again, for another thread.

Thats lovely, its the sort of panel we want too.

Whats the best 50" for around that price range.

Also what about a 42" for around £1-1.2k - perhaps a better sound system can be had with it.

Not sure about a 50" in that price range.... I have had my heart set on a Pioneer Plasma for quite some time now so haven't really looked in depth at other brands.....

With that money, you have to buy the pioneer. It is simply one of the best TV's money can buy. It's worth it over getting a lower quaility 50" anyday.

But, if your heart is set on 50", the Panasonic PX70 or Samsung Q96/7 are nice TV's.

As for the sound, are you looking for another 'all in one' type of thing ? i hope your not...

Depends on price, what we use now isnt 'all in one'.

Pioneer is what we should be getting. As we like the thinner panels, around the side.

Ah ok, just sounded like it from what your said :)

Will you be wanting a HDMI reciever ? 5.1 or 7.1 ?

What are the panny's like?
If possible, we will try get it from initials JL, as the warranty is better than a few.

I've just bought one of THESE (had it a week now).

The quality of this TV has totally blown me away; got it for £200 less than that price using various codes I got off the .net as well.

I have normal Sky+ hooked up (need a good quality scart though, I recommend the IXOS XHT611).

PC is hooked up DVI-HDMI2 and xBOX 360 is connected via VGA

Highly recommended set as long as you get one with the latest firmware.

It depends entierely on what you want. If your into gaming heavily and connecting up your PC, LCD is the only way to go. If it's casual/no gaming/pc and all sky/dvd then you will ge far better quality out of plasma.

The Panasonic PX70/PH10 and Samsung Q96/7 are great TV's for the money. 50" can be had for under £1100.

Then you have the high end stuff. Panasonic have the PZ700 and Samsung have the P96/7 but in all fairnes they are NOTHING compared to Pioneers 428's or any Fujitsu really.

Of course if it is LCD you want, you currently have 2 choices. Sony's D3000 is great with SD aswell as being good with HD/DVD/gaming, and then the M86/7 which are great with any HD, and acceptable at SD.

Will be used to use Sky HD (soon), DVD's, and connecting PC for Media.

42" is plenty, 50" would be great though :p.

Whats the best 42" i can get for the money? Plasma or LCD. Along with 50" too.

Panny's PZ700s (And I the PZ70B's as well) are very nice full HD native 1920x1080p and are just as good as a Pioneer(NEC) panel screen.

I've been using an 8th generation Panasonic, and it has very nice picture quality as well. The current Panny's having switched from silver cases to black, are as asthetically pleasing as the Pioneers now at least in my opinion, and Panny have always made good plasma panels.

Even with the known 'glitch' in the 8th generation panels, which lead to occasional 'purple snake' the amount of screen time my purple snake gets is probably less than 5 minutes since I bought the TV... And its probably racked up 2-3000 hours since I bought it.

Personally I'd rather have Panny's 1920x1080p TH42PZ70B than the 1024x768 42inch Panasonic.. And the Panny can be had for less than £1200. Bargain!

At 50inch both Panny, and Pioneer do 1920x1080 native res screens, but the Pioneer is a lot more expensive. I believe the Pioneer 1366x768 is about the same price as Panny's 1920x1080.

The PZ's are native res 1920x1080 thats not just a scaler taking a 1920x1080 input and scaling down.

There is a compelling argument that 1080p is unnecessary at 42". So compelling that Pioneer don't even bother making a 1080p 42" set, as they believe it's only really of use at 50"+. To tell the difference, you'd need to be sitting closer than 5'-6' away.

Probably the best 42" Plasmas are (as mentioned) the Pioneer 428XD or the Fujitsu 58 series - neither of which are 1080p, iirc. I'm probably going to go with price vs. performance and get a Panasonic TH42PH10 - as I don't want all the tuner, speakers and other guff - just the panel. And at £750 + ~£85 for an HDMI board, it's a bargain. And I can't justify the extra grand for a £1700 Pio 428XD

For that size you really want a plasma screen rather than LCD , anything above 40" and this gen of LCD kinda struggles with PQ ive read

No point starting another thread.

I have a 23" Samsung HD LCD atm, in my room & the size if perfect for HD/Laptop plug in.

But wanting a cheap LCD/Plasma to stick on the wall too - 32-42" if possible.

Whats the cheapest option? HD isnt definately needed.

Does anybody have the Pioneer PDP-428XD / PDP-4280XD..?

As I'd really like to know what's it like when playing games..?

X360 / PS3 etc..?

Does it perform good?
