42" monitor/What would this be like?

Thinking of buying this screen to hook upto new pc. How would this perform. General use i assume it would be ok. How about playing games on. Says it has a native resolution of 800X600 whatever that means. I have no clue. Refresh rate 60hz.

that's a pretty low resolution for such a massive screen! That screen is move intended to be used for multimedia, maybe for TV and movies. It won't support 720p or 1080i HD content, and res will be VERY small even for windows use.
 
So thats a no go then. Just thought id try and go for the cheap option for a big screen. But clearly I know jack about how things work.

Would this be a good choice. HP 23" TFT MONITOR L2335
 
what are you looking for from your monitor? What uses are you getting from it? do you have any specific requirements in terms of looks or features? If you're starting out and are a little unsure where to begin, i'd suggest this selection tool which should help you narrow it down :) All the specs and a hell of a lot more explained on that site too ;)
 
General use/Films/games. Obviously the better the quality the better. But don't want to be paying the earth. i'll try that tool. Only suggested that one because i found one going cheap and the reviews i read seemed like it was very good.

No way in getting a 42" monitor for that.


The acer 20" which is on offer at the moment at £211, is a good choice, for that budget..If size matters most..its widescreen too
Another thing is, for 42", what graphics card do you have?
 
No that 42" thing is not really a monitor although it can be used as. And it is a lot less than 250 quid. It's 1 part of a huge tv wall, originally 10 of them.

What other things should i consider apart from size/price. And thats a rough budget. I don't realy know what a tft costs. Also same size monitors seem to vary dramatically in price. So if you could tell me what else to look out for, i would appreciate it.

Oh and i am getting a whole knew system soon, most probably going for a 7900gtx.
 
Yea i had seen that looks like a great deal. Can these monitors double up and be used as a tv screen. i.e plug dvd/sky e.t.c in, or can they be solely used as a computer monitor unless you have a tv tuner card.

Erm, you can double them up, for dual monitors for sure (If you have the money alter if thats what you meant at first)

I however am not too sure about sky etc...- I dont think so actually...

But I can be proven wrong :)

However at your budget thats the BEST you'll get for 20" - a lot of happy bunnies with the 19" version in this forum, this is the 20" :p

it depends on if you get a model with external video inputs. Some models, like the Dell series, have svideo and composite inputs and so you can connect external sources. Of course many screens offer both DVI and VGA connections, so some things (like X Box 360 for example) you can connect through those interfaces anyway. £250 doesn't give you a lot to play with, but the Acer 2016W mentioned already is good for the price. Alternatively you could look at some of the 19" WS models like the popular Acer 1916W and Viewsonic VA1912W.

There you go, badass speaks the truth :p

However with the £250, as said before its the best bet... So, badass can you confirm this model supports sky etc..

What does the actual connector need to be?

only if it had external inputs. Just treat it as it will play whatever you input into it. However, it doesnt have a built in TV tuner (you can get models which do though) so if you had a freeview digi box / sky / telewest, you just need some way of connecting it to the screen. If the screen had component inputs like the Dell 2007WFP for instance, you could do this and just switch the "input" on the screen to "component" and you're away. You need something to act as the input though as like i say, no built in TV tuner on these models.

note: no extra capacity on the Acer 2016W (and doubt you'll find many at the price range anyway) for peripheral devices since it only has a single VGA connection
 
Well at the moment all things run through my dvd recorder. i.e I have freeview/hi fi/ N64 (:O). Therefore there is just one scart going into my tv at the moment. So if i could connect the dvd recorder to the monitor some how, i'd be good to go. The only reason i'd like to do this is, you never really want to watch tv at same time as looking at monitor, also i could get rid of my tv and this would free up more money to spend on the monitor.
