at the moment i have a 4200x2 @2.5ghz and i am planning to upgrade to something like an e4500 or e6300 sometime soon. i'm just wondering how much of an upgrade that would be if i clocked the c2d to about 2.8ghz in gaming (crysis :)) and just in general.

right now i have an x1950gt, but i will be upgrading to an 8800gt, and my res is 1680x1050.

thanks.

edit: of course i would be getting a new mobo as well. any well known good value clockers?

edit: is the 2160 worth considering or should i opt for one with a bigger cache?

Any P35 motherboard should get any conroe to 3GHz (although I had to play with a recent build a bit). I like the e2180 and the Asus P5k, very complete and capable pairing.

My advice (I know you didnt ask but still~_^) would be to just upgrade your graphics card and maybe add more RAM to your system.

When you do upgrade go for a Quad! They overclock pretty well too! I~ went from a single core athlon 64 3200+ to a Quad 6600 overclocked to 3.4GHz and the difference was amazing. Of course i also quadrupled my RAM (1 to 4GB).

thanks for the advice, i'll get a p35 board so i can upgrade to a 45nm quad when i can afford one, but i will just buy a cheap dual core for now.

i've found an ASROCK SKT-775 4CORE1600TWINS-P35 for £56 at a local shop, has anybody had any experience overclocking with this board? i'll post in the mobo section as well.

For a bit of reference; my stock E6320 (1.86GHz) performed exactly the same as my AMD x2 3800+ at 2.5GHz. I tested it mostly with encoding video, and they were pretty much identical.

Then I overclocked the E6320 to around 3GHz and the difference was amazing -- about a 70-80% performance boost over the AMD.

i would say go for the go like smoke E2*** series... VERY overclockable... but then if you want to game, then take the higher cache models...

or, just go for a G0 Q6600
