42PX60: How to get correct aspect ratio via VGA???

Hi,

I've recently bought a Panasonic TH42PX60 plasma. I've also got a PC which I'm connecting to the plasma via the normal vga connection to the VGA port on the TV.

The problem I'm having is getting the correct aspect ratio for video's/etc via the VGA port. I know the exact resolution of this TV is 1024x768, so therefore set my PC to output in that res. This gives a very sharp picture and clear picture, although it is obviously slightly stretched width-wise due to the non-square pixels of this set. I have also tried setting my tv to a couple of the wide-screen resolutions, but this causes the image to be not as sharp (i guess due to the fact its not 1:1 pixel mapping anymore).

SO... can you suggest what is the best method to get a sharp looking image whilst retaining the correct aspect ratio.

I have read a couple of brief notes mentioning you can change settings in VLC and ffdshow, but nothing conclusive AND i don't know what to change and to what values etc.

Is there somewhere that I can set the fact that my resoution is 1024x768 but it's being displayed on a widescreen tv so is stretched???

Unfortunatly nvidia, and ati still havent added a 'non square' pixel option into the drivers, however as you already mentioned some video player software allows you to configure the aspect ratio independantly of the resolution.

Personally I just went with the 1360x768 resolution, its 'mostly' sharp, but you can spot where it's thrown away pixels sometimes, but only really on the smallest text. By the time your gaming, or watching video, its pretty much unnoticeable imho.

Ok thanks for that. Also what refresh rate did you use and why???

Has anyone else done it via the other method, and know what settings to change either in VLC or ffdshow???

:)

OT: When you guys connect via VGA, do you notice the screen flickering? The last time I tried to connect my PC to the plasma, I noticed a lot of flickering, can't really figure out what it is as the refresh rate is what it should be (60hz). Any tips?

I used 75hz, as I figured that as Pal's framerate is 25fps (ok, but most AVI/DIVX type files seem to be stored 24, or 25fps progressive anyway.), and 75/3 = 25, so each frame plays 3 times.).

Anyway seems to be smooth at pal playback. If I want NTSC playback, then I switch to 60hz. Seems fine to me, no flickering or anything.

There are some settings to 'tune' the TV to the clock phase which does seem to make it flicker when its not 'just right'

To be honest though with the Panasonic, it was almost right from the start.

With an Nvidia card you can just add it as a custom resolution with the standard control panel. Not sure about ATi, you might need one of the 3rd party tuning softwares, but its definatly possible on ATi as well.
