bbspeed said:you will probably be able to get the opty for less
optys also tend to clock better
TheOtherOption said:Another vote for the opty - my 165 has been doing a sterling job, although i've only been able to get it up to 2.47Ghz cos of a carp stepping and my mobo not being the best but otherwise
There are some real bargains to be had - can pick up a 165 for about £65-70 if you look about - I paid over £100 for mine about 2 months ago
TheOtherOption said:In theory yes, but if the applications you use don't make use of both cores then you're unlikely to see any real benefit ...
My old 4000 ran at a lovely 3.1Ghz for months on end on the same mobo so I know its capable of a decent overclock ...
The 165 I got was a carp stepping CCBWE iirc which were known to only go to around 2.5Ghz - whereas other steppings hit nigh on 3Ghz easily ... tis luck of the draw ... either you pay extra for a good stepper from someone or you get one retail and try your luck !
It's not a paltry overclock by any means given it runs at 1.8Ghz stock but I'd have preferred 2.8 odd to be fair
Depends on the stepping to some extent - http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=96900johndixon said:Thanks everyone,
sounds like the 165 is a good choice, is it normally a better overclock than 170's
