So, instead of the 1000D, i thought i might as well go for the 450D after a lot of thinking. Then i thought.. for this price the D3000 is an alternative.. but because it's not out yet there is no proper side by side comparison of the 2.

So i'm asking you guys whether you think i should wait a little bit until the D3000 comes out and then see how that compares to the 450D?
Or just say screw it and buy the 450D?

IMO, GO TO A SHOP!!

Look at the camera's what fit's in your hand well. For me Canon is the best fit! Although I have found the Nikons to have a slightly slicker menu system. Also bear in mind you need to set money aside for glass. Most USM lenses are of a good enough for normal printing sizes.

You could for example buy a used 50mm Macro lens (£120?), a used 55-200mm lens (£80 - more if you want a USM lens) and use the 18-55mm IS kit lens. Then you have a good focal range for £200 and you have somthing for macro stuff, if your into that kinda thing. Then on a popular auction site you can get refurbed 450D's for £430ish with lots of stuff. Just simpler than sourcing the stuff yourself and a bit cheaper. Your looking at about £630 there.

If you can't stretch drop the macro lens. IMO thats your best bet, of course if macro is important to you you could always opt for a 1000D.

DON'T buy untill you have handled one.

EDIT: To prove lenses are just as important as the camera see Raikiri's post with the planes for some awesome pics with a 400D.

Have been to one. The D60 is more comfortable, but i find the 450D still handles great. D3000 isn't out yet so i can't try that, but it's similar to the D60?

Not gonna buy any more lenses just yet, so don't need to worry about that.

So 450D buy today / tomorrow or wait like a month til D3000's are out?

That was what I was going to ask you. Can you wait another month or will something else new be coming out a month after that and have you wondering whether you should wait then as well?

Well to be honest, cameras dont really get released as regularly as other gadgets so I think its worth the wait to see what improvements the D3000 brings to the market.

the 450d is what im looking at myself.i have seen it for 499 but can get a tamron 70-300 discounted for 69.99 at the time of purchase.anyone can shed some light on this lens for me as to wether its any good or if its worth 70 quid etc?

DONT!

used one at the weekend and its far too slow for focusing (well for football at least) Depending on what you're wanting to use it for though it may be an ok lens to start with.

EDIT

Heres some photos from the weekend using my mates setup (450D with tamron) bearing in mind they're generally unprocessed or barely processed (my mate did them)

And heres some from the very first time using my canon 70 - 300 IS along with some further down the line with some better processing as well. Theres not too much difference between the lenses really other than my progression with shooting football and post processing but hopefully it will give you a better idea of the lens you're looking at

ok,have to say i can tell the difference between the 2 sets of pics even as a noob but a quick google says the lens u mentioned is around 400 compared to 70 for the tamron.is the tamron really that awfull a lens for 70 quid as an extra lens to the kit lens, even if i just used it while starting out and replace it at a later date when skill and funds allow?

Its an alright lens, perhaps I was overly harsh with DONT seeing as I'm using the canon. yes you get what you pay for is what I'm saying. At the longer end of the lens the quality wont be as good as the canon but thats to be expected. But my question would be is what you would be using the 70 - 300 mm for? For static and slow moving objects it should be ok cos you'll have time to focus but once it gets there it produces a fine enough image.

One other thing to note is that certainly on the latter pictures in the second link I did have a circular polariser filter on rather than the bare lens so that cut down on the glare and improved the colours slightly so the straight out of camera shots were instantly improved.

how about the sigma 70-300? does this perform better than the tamron? would it be wiser to save the 70 now (or use it for accessories) and then at a later date look at getting the sigma ,or something else altogether once i figure out what type of shots i will be taking.

Well I cant pass comment on the sigma lens as I haven't used one and also I've only had this camera 9 months now so I'm not as up to speed with other sites which do comparisons on cameras and lenses showing 100per cent cropped images etc to see the difference in quality. perhaps if someone else reads this they could post a link?

What i would suggest is if you plump for the 450D with kit lens, take it out, take some pictures, get a feel for the camera and take it from there. Also take a look at the post your pictures thread on here. browse through the images, see what other people are taking pictures of and think to yourself would you like to take pictures like that and if you do then that may influence what lens you wish to buy next. But depending on what you decide may also influence what you have to save up for :p

Accessories wise standard things are filters, tripods, and cleaning equipment to keep your camera dust free! But again, some accessories may have to take priority depending on what type of photos you want to take.

But whatever you decide, welcome to an expensive hobby and hope you dont look back :D

yeah , i think i will stick just to the kit for now until i get a feel for the camera and a feel for the type of pic i'll be taking.

Accessories wise i guess would be memory cards a bag of some sort and some form of cleaning gear as the essential purchases with filters and things coming as and when i feel a need for them.

i can feel my wallet getting lighter already.

sorry for the hijack by the way Razor,i just felt it would be silly to start a new thread when we both have similar questions etc

 Lol. No problem mate. It would be hypocritical if i were to complain :p

When you mention cleaning Derek, what kinda stuff needs cleaning and how often? I bought some Hama lens cleaning pen thing because it had good reviews.
And some products point out the obvious; that the sensor has to be cleaned.. what's the best way around this? (And which bit is the sensor?)
What else needs cleaning?

Anyone else think i should just buy or wait?
I kinda want to get it now and being my first DSLR i'll be dead happy if i just buy, but i'm curious at how the D3000 will perform. The thing that's leaning me towards a Canon is the full compatibility of all lenses although.

I have just paid for a 70 - 300mm Sigma, the APO version....and I did a lot of research which generally came out with the Sigma on top. There is supposed to be less CA with the Sigma, but focussing can be a tad slow. The lens to get in that class is probably the Canon 55 - 200mm IS, but that's hovering in the £200 bracket. £70 is cheap for a 300mm lens, which on a 450D will be more like 460mm due to the crop factor, but most of the lenses prefer open apertures lke f11 for sharpness....

I was referring to the lenses (both ends) I usually give a lens a quick blast with a rocket blower to get rid of any specs of dust making sure the image will (hopefully) be as clear as possible.

As for sensor cleaning I haven't had to yet so maybe someone else can fill you in on that :)

Fair do.

Arghh so annoyed.. i forgot the time and missed an auction for a brand new 450D with the warranty by a couple of minutes.. and it ended with it at £415 :/
