So if its 1080p 3.5 metres is ok, if anything to far away.

I think 50" would be a strain for my eyes, 46" seems the best bet

you should be fine...just dont have the contrast/brightness set too high.

If you're only watching HD it will be fine, otherwise its too close for SD, LCDs have a sweet spot.
