Strictly for gaming.

I have 1080 Ti / PSU / Case / SSD etc...

Want a cheap upgrade to improve fps, min fps & 0.1% lows.

Thoughts on this ? was thinking down the road i can drop in a 3950x if i get a 1/2 decent motherboard? been out the computer scene for a while now so perhaps i'm talking nosense?

also any recommendations on a motherboard would be great, i think ryzens can auto overclock on something called PMBO? just seen a few vids on YT but i'm far from knowledgeable

Cheers

Not quite the answer you're after but I went from an i7-4770k 32gb ram and 2080 (non super) to a 3700x 32gb ram with 2070 Super (Aorus) and as much as I loved my I7 and didn't feel it was struggling particularly I was wrong. It was struggling and the 3700x is eating everything I throw at it without breaking a sweat.
I went with the X570 Aorus Elite. Comes up favourably in a fair few reviews including Gamers Nexus. Even if you saved a few pennies and went with a 3600 to free up more budget for the motherboard this is a really good shout.

Edit: 2700 will do you proud is my bet as a stand in (I missed reading that but I'll leave the 3600 suggestion up just in case)

I went from a 4770k at 4.5ghz to a 3600 with an RTX 2080 and whilst my FPS hasn't shot up by more than a few % my lows are much better and I no longer get the stutter I was getting across a number of games.

I went for the 3600 so I can justify getting a Ryzen 4000 CPU when they come out.

this!

So you guys reccomend the 3600 instead of the 2700 (similar price)

Does the ryzen 3950x (future upgrade path) go in any ryzen motherboard or is it a hedt type of motherboard ?

Also will ryzen 4000 probably work on am4 boards ? - just thinking altenative upgrade path is all.

Looks like I got a lot of research ahead of me.

One question does the ryzen auto overclocking work on b450 boards or only on 470?

I'd never buy a 6 core 12 thread cpu in 2020. 8 core is the future. If you upgrade frequently it doesn't really matter tbh. A 2700 clocked well with a 2070 super will play games perfectly well. 3600 has a higher ipc obviously but the choice is personal and I recently went from a 4790k to a 2700 and have no regrets. I do have multiple spec machines and I have every intention of swapping the 2700 come ryzen 4000 series.

B450 Tomahawk/Carbon MAX (make sure is the MAX) & Ryzen 3600 as it has better gaming perf than the 2700X. You would be able to drop on the the 3950X and the upcoming 4000 shall you wish so.

Make sure you buy a good DDR4 kit to overclock at least to 3600C16/C14 if not 3800C16.
Some can do it and are cheap. Pay a visit to the Memory section

Pure gaming probably better to go 3600x atm.

The extra cores/threads on the 2700x could come in handy tho at a later date.

But it's your call.

Right now, the 3600x is a faster gaming chip.

Get a 3600 now and then in a couple of years once the 4700X goes on bargain bin sale grab and upgrade to that. Win win.

You're planning to upgrade again anyway, so go for the 3600 for now and drop in a 4000 series later in the year.

As you plan to upgrade soon, I would buy the best motherboard for your budget. What is your budget?

The 3600 is the best bang for buck zen 2 gaming CPU, it's not worth getting the x variant as your paying 20% more for 2% more fps and the crazy thing is you can probably sell your 4770k used for almost as much as a new 3600. Pair it with a b450 tomahawk and 3600mhz ram and your golden.

This is what I did back in October. Psycho Sonny will no doubt be popping in this thread to tell us it is a stupid thing to do however.

Just edited my post above also as I said 3600X instead of 3600 by mistake. There is a good chance a new 3600 overlock well anyways. Mine is better than a stock 3600X by quite a bit after overclocking.

3200mhz CL16 kits is fine for Zen 2 and dirt cheap.
