Is It worth to upgrade to 8700k and maximus x hero from 4770k and cheap mobo, for 100 pounds (this is after selling my ddr3 ram and cpu). I got 1080ti and play most of the current games. My current z97 mobo is on its way out as it is loosing ram sticks... tried my home media cpu 4790 and it is not the cpu related.

I already have ddr4 ram so the question is, is it worth it would I see much improvement or perhaps alternative route?

I'd say for £100 it may be a good step up, but going 4 cores to 6 and only 2-3 intel generations is not much cop.

Worst case scenario you're going from 4.6GHz or so to 4.9 or 5GHz, so also not a massive improvement in single core performance.

However for £100 to get you into DDR4 and 6 cores it might put off that bigger upgrade for a few years. Especially if it sorts out a reliability issue. I'm still on 4770k for now, but would prob aim for Ryzen 2000 or above, or Intel 10th gen. That's largely because I don't want to keep taking my WC loop apart though.

For £100 I'd do it. Something more modern would be better, but it is going to cost you a lot more than £100 to buy the CPU, motherboard & RAM.

Thanks guys!

I had the z87 setup since 2014 and it was a well spent 500 pounds. Yet as it was in and out so many times over the years I must have bent some of the pins slightly while swapping parts out ( I think when I got the be quiet dark rock pro 4 but it was fine for a year )

How much more would I need to spend to see a much bigger improvement? Many thanks Sam

yes its worth it

the 8th gen intels jumped from 4 to 6 cores

the jump from that is the 5600X which was a fantastic value and efficient CPU

Not really worth it for a 1080 Ti, the 8700K is fine for that card. I'd only consider these if you're buying a 4080/4090.

Another question if I may. Is b die ram worth it for 8700k? Not sure if 8700k would benefit from extra speed or tighter timings perhaps?

I can have a 32gb(2x16gb) 8pack edition kit for £80, I managed to get 16gb (2x8gb) but it might me little low for some games and my browsing at the same time.

I think the key question here is what are you paying for the CPU and motherboard? We know it is £100 more than selling your current cpu/mobo/RAM but if you are getting £50 for your current kit that's a good deal, if you're getting £150 then it's not.

It's kind of an awkward upgrade, it's better for sure but you're also then in the situation of having spent money on something that's already several generations old. A cheap AM4 setup might be a better option depending on price.

Honestly I wouldnt bother, if youve already got the ddr4 you can get a brand new ryzen 5600 cpu and motherboard for a little over 250 quid that would blow socks off an 8700

Assuming you looking at about £100-150 for your CPU mobo and RAM then your at the same money
