So for some fun and for curiosity, I tested my 1080 in my Gaming PC 4790K running t 4.4ghz and then tested it in my music studio PC Xeon 6 core running at 4ghz.

I was interested in whether PCI -e 2.0 or 3.0 made any difference. And I wanted to know whether running 2 x 1070 sli in my X58 setup would be detrimental to performance as my S1150 gaming PC is not an SLI mobo.

Seems to be that both systems are pretty much the same in Firestrike and the 2 extra cores of the xeon make up for the 400mhz extra clock of the 4790k. (give or take a few hundred points)

So if you are on an aging system and have or want to try sli don't worry too much about being cutting edge...I'm really impressed with my Xeon X58 system.

Its holding its own despite pci-e 2.0 and 400mhz less speed... (hopefully pascal drivers will sort out any sli issues currently)

I'm now toying with the idea of swapping pc's over...X58 becomes by Gaming rig as its sli ready and I might try out 2 x 1070 to drive my predator x34 and moving the 4790k pc into my recording studio for Pro Tools use.

I certainly don't think I will gain anything huge by getting a socket 1150 mobo just for sli It will just cost me money...

The xeon runs at 48c full load under water so I might see if I can get it up to 4.2ghz

Hope some find this interesting. :p

Cheers

EDIT : UPDATE

Update

4.4ghz Xeon V 4.4ghz 4790k

Xeon wins :D Remarkable really considering the age of this X58...Ok its got two extra cores but still!

Funny this cause I am rocking a 2500k but have been offered a x5670 and am trying to find out if worth it. This seems to be the closest I can find to an answer.

I've just done a run of firestrike at 4.4ghz on the xeon..Will update thread shortly.:)

So thats tat for tat comparison.

from my experiences with the x58 I wouldn't go with anything higher than a 980 or equivalent. people forget that 3Dmark equals not real gaming performance.

Well while its in the 1080 is in the x58 rig...I'll run some gaming benchies

Rise of the Tomb raider incoming.:D

Newer games are now better at multi-threading tho. The division loves threads. It is butter smooth using all 12 threads evenly on my i7 970.

Also many games use more than 4 cores / threads. BF4 uses 6 from memory on my rig. That's a big handicap for i5's without HT (for example).

True,

A couple of years back having a quad was enough...i5 for gaming....

But HT and cores do makes things faster...in today games....Fact.

Its amazing that PCI-E 2.0 is no difference to PCI-e 3.0 with a cutting edge GFX card either...

It'd be nice if every game was properly multi-threaded, because these older CPUs are still more than enough when their resources are properly used. It's just a shame that's not the case.

But a xeon @4.4ghz cannot even be compared to an AMD 1090 in single threaded performance....

The comparison is moot...

Just done this little test

In single threaded performance is 25% behind a 6700k

But the xeon beats it in multi...

8 years of progress right there....NOT! :p

I disagree. In terms of Cinebench single core scores for example, the gap is around 20% (couldn't find a 4.4GHz one, so I'll round up).

Nobody's suggesting the Xeon isn't better, but there's not a gaping chasm between the two like you seem to be suggesting. Of course, that wasn't even the point of my post, and I was merely offering my experience that even a "mere" Phenom II is enough to run modern games very well when they take advantage of it properly. I thought this was a nice thread about how older CPUs can still cope in general, rather than the meeting of the Xeon fan club. Of course, a rude response from someone reading what they want to see rather than what was written is what I should have expected in this section of the forum. :D

Your Phenom at 4ghz is behind a 3.4ghz i7

Its not a meeting of the xeon club

I'm just saying that if your have a 8 year old system...Then running a cutting edge 1080 GFX card is not pointless!

Exactly!

If comparing CPU's, you should take SLI into consideration. I've noticed a difference with the 5930k with it's extra lanes and bandwidth compared with my previous SLI setups on a 4670k and 4790k.

But the 5820k is not crippled in a 2 card scenario over a 5930k....

Erm. Just noticed as I have not been around much lately. You got a 1080 Easy?

Thought you was going to get a 1070 until the Ti came along? All that talk about the 1080 and you went and got one yourself? lol, oh dear...

I will just leave this here:

Dude Keep up....

I'm not keeping the 1080 you noob :p

Looks like that old dog has still got some life in it, dunno why people are comparing much newer more expensive CPUs when your just showing what your old studio PC can still do, thats pretty good getting the top spot on the firestrike, i dont think Kaap will let you keep that for very long though :)

Yeah me neither lol

I wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers ....:p
