4790k any regrets?

None at all.

I went from an Asus Z68 2500k @4.6 to an Asus z97 4790k @ 4.7 and the difference is for me astounding. 30 - 50% quicker as a CPU, and 20 to 25% quicker on the GPU SLI frame rates.

a real win upgrade for me.

I must now update my sig.

TBH the 980x hasn't even seen its full potential yet, let alone any of the X79 hex cores.

When support arrives the 980x or Xeon equivalent will be more than good enough. It's mostly because we're still held back on core support. When the 2600k launched it was benched against the 980x and when cores were being used the 980x beat the 2600k, even with the 2600k at 5ghz.

So basically now it's just a waiting game.

X99 isn't a mainstream system though, people need to realise that. It's a platform designed for workstations hence the Enterprise tag.

Z97 is mainstream, 4790k should be the most popular selling CPU atm.

I am running a 2500 @ 4.7 at the moment and will be upgrading with in the next month maybe 2 if I move over the the 4790 which I am leaning towards due to cost and the X99 being brand new will it last me 3 to 4 years ? as I wont be able to afford a new system before that.

If I may interject here please?

I like to call myself an Extreme enthusiast, we you all know I am, but I wish to be a little sceptic on the whole upgrade process.

As a Yorkshireman I have to tell it how it is, much of this upgrading malarky is one-upmanship to have a more powerful pc than another. The question is this.. DOES it do what you want it to do right now? If yes hold off upgrading if no then upgrade.

I have both a 4970k AND a 3960x 2011 pin cpu and t obe honest i would never have had the latter if I didnt know a dude whom used to work for Foxconn (Cheers Andrew Ouyang ) as FAE, he owed me a favour and so he sent this CPU off to me. But even free the ONLY way I can justify having a chip like this is that the X is really higher binned chip than the K series (overclocking ) and I run and use 3DS MAX on a regular basis.

To be honest I am yet to mess with socket 1150 overclocking as I went straight from X58 to X79 and i have been IMPRESSED with the longevity of the aforementioned X series of system boards.

Having said all of the above, could i justify spending my heard-earned money on a 2011-3PIN (X99) CPU? and DDR 4? Not with xpower 2 mobo and a 3960x cpu no way.
I believe the gains will not be worth it for around another YEAR and frankly upgrading to keep up 'with the Jones's' bores me:)

My apologies on the little rant there, have fun:)

:D You're supposed to say upgrade so you sell more :P, JK good points. I Will hold of for the bench marks though the cache situation has got me thinking, does 20mb cache have a big benefit over 8?

You know, I dont think it really does in real world results. Benchmarks sure, but real world? It is doubtful

Oh oho oh yes i am sorry:P Change and upgrade your cpu's etc more than TOWIE girl's underwear and oh yes errrrrrrrrrrrm buy more ic-diamond whilst you are at it...and aaaaah errrrrrrrrrrrrrm-never mind:P:P

So hopefully in September we should see 4790k vs 5820K benchmarks.

Got a feeling the higher clock speeds of the 4790k will win most benchies but the multi-tasking ones the 5820k?

Think it will boil down to the X99/5820k prices also

Yeah pretty much. The core will be the same ideally so clock speed will dictate the single core overall performance. Though bring the 12 threads into play and you have a completely different animal. :D

Ppz who jumped on the z97 platform do you regret not waiting for x99?

Thoughts?

X99 will cost a lot more for most people and they wont pay the prices.

The Z97 platform will also support Intel's Broadwell chips. In my opinion they won't regret it.

Thats my point, a lot of people on the Z platforms are more likely to upgrade their cpu's everytime thus costing more in the long run, with X platform you're pretty much sorted, also a new motherboard is always released for Z's so inb4 z98.. People will ditch their cpu + mobo on MM for upgrade. With X you're pretty much set for next 4 years, multi GPU is the way forward esp with 4k on the horizon

also the 4770 is a far better cpu than people think, once you've delidded it, it actually feels stronger than the i5 2500.....so far, fingers crossed:cool:

Its a very good point you make there about having kit to last many years however technology changes very fast and some concern about the tech that comes in-between although one can get the addon boards if required.

I don't think Z97/4790k is a bad choice at all for all we know the 4790k could be top of many benchmarks compared to the haswell e chips even guess next Friday on August 29th we find out either way :)

Any 4770 will be superior than a 2500k. Two generations newer, HT and better IPC ,, So yeah of course it would mal. :p

a nice honest answer, for most mainstream users there has been no need to upgrade from sandybridge, for high end multi gpu systems running a 4k monitor then i would say go for it otherwise all you are doing is getting a bigger epeen.

edit i will eat a hat of your choice if you can show me something that will not run on a 2500k but will run on a 4790K or a game benchmark where it cant be played???

Had Z97 and X99 been available at the same time I would have gone X99 + 5820K without a doubt.

Looking at Z97 as something to mess with until X99 arrives and I pick it up later on, Z97 is great though and my 4790K does 4.9Ghz which is pretty awesome when you consider the performance VS the price.

X99 is the way forward imho though.
