My PC. In sig is struggling to play BF4 at Max settings. GPU Usage is around 60% while my CPU Maxes out at 100% while playing. I think the CPU is holding it back.

I have heard BF4 benefits from Hyper threading/additional cores.

Would you go for the relatively expensive 4790k or go for X99, motherboard changes would be required but that's not a massive problem. I can sell my current equipment.

Not sure many if any games make use of 6 cores right now. Price diff seems between the 2 cpu's aint massive right now.
Might it not be better to wait for skylake, to better future proof yourself?
That said, i've just bought 2 sets of 5820k+X99 boards, but that's cos i'm upgrading our dept design from Xeons that are equivalent to i7-2600K.
I guess it depends if you can get a decent price for your ROG mobo.

Pretty confused how two quite frankly old graphics cards are being held back by one of the fastest quadcore CPUs you can buy???

A few comments on here suggest that SLI benefits from an i7.

For the same money that you're talking about swapping an i5 for an i7, surely you could sell the 670s and buy a 980Ti... I doubt you'd have problems then!

I just think you have very little to gain in the CPU department for gaming, however you have the opportunity to swap SLI for a single card setup that will also be a big step up in performance

Haha fair enough.

I may have been a bit overzealous suggesting that the cost would be similar too... But honestly, I'm not sure why you would be contemplating going i5 to X99 for games only, especially when the weakest point in your system is the graphics cards.

Surely even a single 780Ti or R9 290X would be a better bet (considering the deals to be had on those now)

I wouldn't under estimate these cards to be honest. They surprise me. It will run BF4 in Ultra at 1440p with only the occasional slow down. But I assumed that was my CPU because of the 100% usage. While my GPUs are at 60%

What VRAM versions ? 2gb or 4gb cards ? As I know for a fact your CPU is not the culprit here . i have a 2500k paired up with a 780ti and it demolishes bf4 at any setting providing I don't up the res and go beyond the 3GB VRAM limit

You guys make me sad :( Ill keep on with it for a while. Then I will save my pennies and buy a 980ti guessing all brands are about the same now. In terms of quality.

YOur CPU seems like a beast, i wouldnt be letting go of that for a while. Yeah unfortunately its pretty easy to go over 2gig vram at 1440p.

Some uses ref boards some use custom pcbs with possibly higher quality parts . Tbh unlesss you have a major aversion to any brand or want a particular cooler or warranty then they'll all be solid . I think im one of the few ever who's fell in love with reference cards after so many custom cards .

There good solid cards , I had a MSi pe 670 but as above runs out of puff with VRAM befor grunt .

My CPU is an animal. 29.c idle and 55.c max rock solid stable 5ghz. But tone it down to 4.6ghz for day to day use.

980TI after I sort some other stuff out. Got some problem fans and quite fancy some new cans.

Has anyone seen the prices OCUK are charging for the 4970K? You can get an OEM 5820K for near enough the same money as the 4790K. I know a X99 platform is a bit more money overall but it's surely a no brainer when choosing between the two CPU's.
