I'm starting to feel the age of my system in some work tasks now and I've got the upgrade bug - been looking to upgrade for a year now! :p

I'm going to have a really tight budget that I'd rather not stretch if I can help it so I've been looking at a 4790k over an X99 or Skylike system. Still worth buying one?

Yes, the 4790k is still a viable option and well worth the money. I am running a 4790k and I don't see or feel the need to upgrade for the next few years.

Do you need a 4790k for some specific tasks? The 4690k is a good CPU and could save you more money to put towards a better GPU etc..

Video editing and occasional gaming - hyperthreading is going to be more useful than a better gpu :)

I recently went from i5 760@4ghz > [email protected]. The difference in benchmarking is huge. Gaming wise I only really play GTA 5 but now it never dips below 60fps in action / heavy action like it used to.

Cost after sale of old parts should be around £140 (£280 for motherboard, ram, cpu - olds parts sale ~£140) I also doubled the speed of my SSD going from SATA II > SATA III and gained USB3. I expect the parts to last 3-5 years before upgrading again

Hoping for £2-300 after flogging my old stuff so £3-400. Has to be an all black or black & white motherboard though :p

You should be able to do it cheaper than that - may have to get a tin of spraypaint though

oh, Cinebench R15 scores show that the i7 4790k overclocked to 4.7ghz scores the same as Skylake @ stock settings

Check out the Members Market, I know a 4790k sold recently on there for £205.

As Guest2 mentioned, you can touch up the non-black parts with a can of spray paint ;)

MSI Krait is cheaper and priiiiidy :D

Kingston Memory

Thankfully I've already got 16gb of Kingston HyperX so I can re-use that. That's another advantage of not moving to X99/Skylake!

Painting brand new parts would make me nervous though! I don't mind doing it with fans, cases etc as a quick test and they're fine but a board with a long warranty...

Within a month, Skylake will be the same price as the 4790K, this includes motherboards etc. DDR4 is also dirt cheap.

It's just the first month where stock is limited that the crazy prices happen. Once the madness is over in September, the price will be 4790k level.

If buying new (including having to buy new memory) Skylake is a nobrainer, once it's the same price as the 4790k. Faster, much better chipset (Z170). Though if you already have a 16GB high speed DDR3 kit etc, then a 4790k becomes a valid choice, imo.

Very good point, I'd say it might be worth holding off for another couple of weeks if possible and seeing what happens with Skylakes prices.

It would seem that you're all correct, it is still worth buying! Almost twice as fast at rendering than my 8320 :)
